## **Position Title: Director, Regional Affairs**

## **Position Summary**
Promotes the interest of the waste and recycling industry, directs advocacy efforts, and creates a presence for NWRA within the assigned region. Director level supports approximately 6–8 assigned states.

## **Program Management**
Develop a presence and identity for the waste and recycling industry in the state capitals through attendance and participation at meetings, etc. Promote programs through meetings, speeches, and correspondence with legislators and regulators that inform them about the waste industry and its policy positions.
Implement legislative and regulatory policies of chapters.
Serve as spokesperson for industry.
Monitor state legislative and regulatory activity.
Promote member participation in public policy forums.
Develop media contacts in cooperation with NWRA Communications Team.

## **Membership**
Assist existing members by providing information, expediting requests made of headquarters, setting appointments with government officials upon request, and helping prepare for speaking engagements, etc.
Staff Chapter Steering Committees and other chapter committees, including preparation of agenda, background materials, and meeting minutes.
Promote an active retention program for existing members through regular site visits, phone calls, correspondence, meetings, etc., at a rate commensurate with chapter goals.
Assist in the recruitment of new members in accordance with chapter goals.
Draft and distribute communications to members.
Act as liaison with Washington office on behalf of chapter members.

## **Event and Administrative Management**
Develop and manage member events to raise funds for advocacy efforts in accordance with NWRA policies.
Develop and manage regional budget(s).
Supervise contract lobbyists and managers in accordance with NWRA policies.
Organize, plan, and implement statewide and regional meetings in accordance with NWRA policies.

## **Other Duties as Assigned by the CEO**

## **Skills and Experience**
5–7 years of state‑level advocacy.
Proven experience organizing and managing advocacy campaigns on behalf of relevant issues to the waste and recycling industry.
Experience managing and producing fundraising events.
Experience working in a state government advocacy environment.
Bachelor’s degree in political science, or relevant experience.

## **Travel and Work Requirements**
Frequent travel throughout the assigned region and regular travel to other regions, state capitals, member locations, chapter meetings, and national NWRA events.
Ability to respond to time‑sensitive legislative, regulatory, member, and media matters outside standard business hours when necessary.
Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, by video, and in writing with internal and external audiences, including large groups.

## **Physical Demands**
Ability to communicate orally with management, other co‑workers, and customers both individually and in front of a group is imperative. Regular use of the telephone and e‑mail for communication is essential in order to carry out the functions of this position.
Prolonged sitting is essential to perform duties of the position.
Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential for normal conversations, to receive ordinary information, and to prepare or inspect documents.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally may be required.
