Description

The National LGBTQ Task Force is the country’s premier social justice organization fighting to improve the lives of LGBTQ people, and working to create positive, lasting change and opportunity for all. We build power, take action and create change to achieve freedom and justice for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people and their families. As a progressive racial, economic, and social justice organization, the Task Force is building a society that values and respects the diversity of human expression and identity.

The Task Force is almost a year into reigniting our field presence. We currently have 5 total positions on the Field team. We are looking for candidates who are results-oriented organizers committed to coaching LGBTQ+ leaders towards growth, building grassroots people power, and creating the conditions to deliver concrete wins for LGBTQ+ people. Job Title: Field Organizer

Location: Washington, DC, New York, Florida, or Texas (location flexible)
Travel: Up to 65% (Could spend multiple months in different locations)

Description

The Field organizer is a new role which will join an existing Field team to lead inspiring, cutting-edge work for base-building, long-term leadership development, and direct political action throughout the LGBTQ+ and progressive movement. Our primary focus is to continue to strategically grow the field presence and vision of the Task Force by nurturing relationships with partner organizations and community leaders. The ideal candidate loves building relationships and is people-first, with an ability to communicate our issues to “everyday people.”

Responsibilities

  • Organize in and with communities to advance an agenda of intersectional queer liberation. This will be accomplished by engaging in electoral strategies, relationship building, political and popular education.
  • Recruit, motivate and inspire volunteers, volunteer leaders and staff at campaigns and partner organizations to master the core concepts of building big teams, grassroots fundraising, coalition building and leadership development.
  • Organize in faith communities so that LGBTQ people can participate fully in all aspects of the life of their faith community, as well as move people of faith or with secular views to action on political justice campaigns.
  • Engage in grassroots organizing focused on shifting and transforming the faith narrative by engaging people of faith to demonstrate their public support for LGBTQ people and policy solutions.
  • Support and organize text and phone banking, canvassing, voter registration, and other forms of voter and constituency education and contact for various campaigns.
  • Provide technical assistance to and facilitate connections among partner organizations for a variety of campaigns and projects. Develop a curriculum and train, facilitate and coach participants for a variety of training and events across our democracy, equity and faith work and programs.
  • Organize at the federal and state level through a lens of racial, gender, and reproductive justice and ensure that our organizing has a grassroots and cross-movement focus.
  • Attend state and federal policy meetings, conversations, and planning sessions to coordinate and collaborate in organizing efforts across organizations and movements.
  • Collaborate with the Task Force’s communications team to develop tactics including to expand the reach of people who know about the organizing work of the National LGBTQ Task Force. Ensure that our work and vision is strategically shared with the Task Force’s shareholders including public speaking engagements and social media.
  • Works collaboratively with our Creating Change team on organizing efforts to support our annual conference.
  • Engages with our Development department to fundraise, support events and develop donor relationships for the Task Force.
  • Is responsible for all miscellaneous tasks that help to support and advance all field related activities.

Requirements

  • 2-5 years organizing experience on community issue, legislative and/or ballot measure campaigns.
  • Strong candidates will possess bilingual language skills (with a focus on Spanish and ASL).
  • Proven track record of building and leveraging relationships to inspire others to take action.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and natural curiosity about all aspects of the LGBTQ+ community, especially with trans communities, communities of faith and communities of color.
  • Accountable to trackable deliverables, establishing measurable and quantifiable outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to give and receive developmental feedback, and learn and grow in the work.
  • Comfortable with organizing and engagement with clergy, faith leaders, other people of faith; and people with secular views.
  • Experience and desire to take calculated risks.
  • Is self-aware and self-reflective.
  • Is an excellent problem-solver.
  • Proficient and passionate trainer and ability to develop curriculum using adult learning theory.
  • Prefers and thrives in a collaborative environment.
  • Desire and ability to travel extensively, work nights and weekends even on short notice and for extended periods.
  • Understands the intersections of oppression and has a Power, Privilege and Oppression analysis.
  • Demonstrated capacity and desire to work in a multi-cultural environment where diversity based on race, ethnic origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, real or perceived gender identity, physical ability, and spiritual practice is an important value.

How Performance is Evaluated:

  • Success in meeting or exceeding base-building goals.
  • Developing outreach and mobilizations plans.
  • Using metrics for outreach, mobilization, retention, event and action attendance.
  • Track the progress and of significant growth of our members and leaders.
  • Ongoing 1:1 meetings and assessments.
  • Measuring the progression of leaders via activation attendance and leadership development track.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Takes initiative to develop programs and campaigns.
  • Prioritizing projects and use of asana boards to outline steps and manage programmatic outcomes.
