Government Affairs Associate Director

Under the direction of the Executive Director, manages, and coordinates the multi-faceted Government Affairs department of Associated Students. The Government Affairs department is the student government for San Diego State University and is led by elected and appointed student leaders. It is comprised of over 30 student councils and committees, with approximately 400 students serving in volunteer leadership roles. The Government Affairs Associate Director, in close consultation with student leaders and with the assistance of four full-time Government Affairs staff, advises and manages many of the councils and committees of student government; ensures the actions of the student government comply with A.S. bylaws and policies; and ensures the programs, services and events of A.S. Government Affairs are successfully operating and executed. This position serves as a primary contact and resource for various university departments and individuals who interact with A.S. Supports the A.S. Executive Officers and the Executive Director on administrative detail by interpreting and executing policy and by effectively achieving various goals of the organization with minimal supervision.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serves as direct resource and secondary advisor to the many A.S. student leaders across the four governing boards, the A.S. boards and committee and the College Councils
- Ensures all aspects and policies of the A.S. government are followed and met by student leaders and staff
- Serves as a liaison and representative for A.S. at various committees and meetings throughout San Diego State University
- Collaborates with other departments, groups, and individuals in connection with the coordination of A.S. and university activities; advises Executive Director regarding relevant matters and, on occasion, represents the Executive Director
- Coordinates the organization and implementation of A.S. Elections and Appointments
- In consultation with the A.S. Executive Officers and the Executive Director, and with assistance from Government Affairs staff, as needed, plans, coordinates and executes student trainings, retreats and special events
- Provides strategic planning, vision and programming oversight. Makes programming changes, assesses needs, and develops ideas to enhance the attainment of desired outcomes for A.S. programs in partnership with the A.S. leaders and Executive Director. Coordinates with staff to ensure programming execution and day-of logistics
- Creates and oversees departmental budget
Minimum & Preferred Requirements
- Four year degree in a job-related field from an accredited college or university required
- Master’s degree in a job-related field from an accredited college or university preferred
- Five years progressively responsible administrative experience that have provided applicant with required skills required
- Two years in a supervisory role required
- Two years working with student employees and/or volunteers preferred
Starting Range: $85,000-$95,000, Salaried Exempt
SCHEDULE & WORKING CONDITIONS
This is a regular, full-time position with expected hours of Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Work conditions may vary depending upon the location of programs; programs may occur indoors and outdoors, therefore requiring exposure to a variety of elements. While working indoors, the lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available. While working outdoors, the work environment may involve exposure to various elements including but not limited to: sun, heat/cold, dust, pollens and other environmental risks.
This position may also call for occasional business-related driving. A valid California Drivers’ License and proof of automobile insurance is required.
