### Job Overview
The role of the Government Relations Manager is to oversee, develop, and help advance ASM’s legislative and regulatory agenda. This includes strategic outreach to Capitol Hill and executive branch agencies, strategic thinking, and proactively identifying opportunities to increase ASM’s visibility and effectiveness on key issues.

### Essential Functions
(defines the critical end results expected of the jobholder related to the accountabilities above)
1. Identify and cultivate champions for microbiology among policymakers and grow ASM’s presence as a thought leader on policy issues related to the microbial sciences.
2. Manage PPA relationships with fellow stakeholder organizations, key federal agencies, and members of Congress.
3. Maintain a high level of awareness of developments in key policy and legislative areas.
4. Oversee and manage responses to legislation and regulations that require new considerations related to ASM’s positioning on an issue.
5. Develop and implement ASM’s policymaker outreach strategy in coordination with the Director of Federal Affairs.
6. Serve in a staff management role within Federal Affairs.
7. In conjunction with members of the Public and Scientific Affairs Committee as well as other members of the ASM public policy and advocacy team, determine legislative priorities for ASM advocacy efforts.

### Physical Demands
This is largely a sedentary role and may sit or use a PC for long periods. Bending, reaching, or stooping may be necessary for the use of filing cabinets or other office cabinets or office machines. This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, copiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines.

**Education**
Required:
– Bachelors or better.
Preferred:
– Masters or better.
**Experience**
Required:
– Experience in people management required.
– Experience as a registered federal lobbyist.
– Strong advocacy experience and a record of success influencing desired outcomes in a complex environment.
– 7 years of experience in federal policy and advocacy.
