Your tasks and responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of this role, Government Relations Representative, are to:


  • Work with the Senior Director and issue teams to help identify and develop Bayer’s lobbying and political action strategies on priority federal legislative and policy issues, including direct lobbying and grassroots outreach for integrated effective advocacy across all levels of government and within appropriate industry associations;
  • Work with the Senior Director and Directors to help develop, manage and cultivate Bayer’s engagement with key US and international stakeholders on critical issues which affect business value. Key stakeholders include the White House, key US Government Agencies, both Houses of Congress, industry associations, NGOs, think tanks, and international institutions;
  • Help continue to build and leverage a comprehensive map of US-based stakeholders, decision-makers and influencers; and use this to systematically build and maintain relations to provide a sound platform for engagement;
  • Develop technical expertise of primary issues assigned to be a key resource to the GR team and company;
  • Help maximize the effectiveness with trade associations by making them aware of Bayer key priorities, the analytics behind them and the imperative to support them proactively;
  • Assist with providing oversight of the development, implementation and monitoring of lobbying activities and functions, including but not limited to, the following: drafting issue briefs, lobbying points on important issues to Bayer; drafting letters to Members of Congress, Administration officials, working with coalitions and trade associations to broaden and enhance Bayer’s presence and leadership.

Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science or other relevant discipline and zero (0) to two (2) years’ experience- Anticipated hire will not be until after June 1, 2017;
  • Possess political acumen and have the ability to establish bi-partisan contacts with key trade associations, stakeholders,  relevant Members of Congress, relevant Congressional staff, and in the Administration;
  • Proven record of building strong internal working relationships and have demonstrated public policy experience;
  • Knowledge of the legislative and government relations process;
  • Demonstrated exposure or experience in policy development and management;
  • Collaborative working style and solicits buy-in and commitment from colleagues and stakeholders;
  • Forward-thinking and proactive on legislative, regulatory and public policy issues;
  • Ability to recognize and understand political and policy trends;
  • First-hand knowledge of the legislative process, the workings of government and public policy, the NGO and broader political community;
  • Bipartisan and politically astute;
  • Proven ability to effectively interact with employees at all levels of the Bayer organization in all regions, including senior management, and in some cases, with political contacts such as congressional members and staff;
  • Must be creative and can manage innovation, has broad interests and knowledge;
  • Must be willing to offer opinions and judgments;
  • Self-starter who understands constant change in business and political environments;
  • Capacity and drive to understand the business and operational elements of Bayer; including understanding what is mission- critical from the trivial;
  • Demonstrated excellent time management and organizational skills;
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication and listening skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and make decisions quickly;
  • Must exude professional image and have the ability to handle people and situations with tact, diplomacy, discretion, confidentiality and a sense of urgency;
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, professional and ethical work practices;
  • Experience in proactively identifying, analyzing and recommending opportunities and options for improving group efficiencies, as well as cost savings recommendations;
  • Ability to handle stress and work comfortably in a fast –paced environment where priorities and direction may change frequently.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Relevant internship work history;
  • Demonstrated exposure or experience in policy development and management, preferably in the US Congress or the Executive Branch;
  • Knowledge of corporate and/or major trade association space;
  • Experience with relevant issue backgrounds in any of the following: political affairs, healthcare, agriculture, environment, tax, and trade.
