Grassroots Policy Organizer/GPO, SPACEs In Action

Position Overview: The Grassroots Policy Organizer supports the SPACEs In Action (SIA) team through DC’s legislative and budgetary processes while keeping the National landscape in play. The incumbent of this position partakes in organizing and advocating across SIA’s issue areas and organizing portfolio – which includes healthcare equity, childcare and early learning education, climate justice, economic and tax justice, and others. They also support partners through local and national coalitions, working on housing justice, climate justice, and protecting our social safety nets. The candidate will need an understanding of DC’s local government and how advocacy should be framed around it.

The candidate must be based in the greater Washington, D.C. area.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Understand, research, and summarize DC’s legislative and budgetary processes in accessible language;
  • Help the SIA team navigate legislative and budgetary initiatives throughout the Mayor’s and Council’s processes;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local elected officials as it pertains to our advocacy and activism;
  • Participate in partner and coalition meetings to ensure that SIA’s organizing is intersectional and balances the local and national political landscapes;
  • Develop educational and training materials as needed to support SIA organizers and member-leaders participating in advocacy and action;
  • Supporting fellow organizers with base-building and mobilizations;
  • Fully participating in all-hands-on-deck organizing as needed.

Qualifications

  • Combined 4+ years of experience in organizing, advocacy for social justice, public policy analysis (passing legislation/accountability of implementation), and budget campaigns
  • Experience and comfort with DC local government structures and processes and how to frame advocacy and activism around them;
  • Experience and comfort with reading legislative and budget documents and understanding how they impact our work;
  • Experience and comfort with navigating partnerships and coalition spaces;
  • Experience with training and developing leaders is preferred.
  • Bilingual (Spanish, Amharic, Tagalog) candidates are preferred.

Compensation

Salary: $65,000-90,000, depending on experience and fit.
