The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Manager, Grassroots Advocacy and Patient Engagement. Working as a member of the Advocacy and Public Policy department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.

The person in this role is responsible for managing the recruitment, training, engagement, and retention of volunteer advocates across the country to advance federal and state policies that seek to create a world free of lung disease. Work closely with Advocacy and Public Policy staff to identify advocates and patient stories, maintain engagement in policy initiatives, and manage year-round advocate engagement. Must be committed to recruiting and working closely with underserved communities.

A strong emphasis is placed on health equity, with a focus on recruiting and building relationships within underserved and historically underrepresented communities. This is a grant-funded position and plays a critical role in driving patient-centered advocacy and advancing the mission of the American Lung Association.

Location

The position is located at the American Lung Association’s Washington, DC office and will be a hybrid of in-person and virtual work.

Responsibilities

  • Manage year-round advocacy engagement, including two annual Capitol Hill Days, for the Lung Action Network
  • Manage volunteer and grassroots engagement strategies and activities around American Lung Association advocacy priorities
  • Work with advocacy team to activate grassroots networks to advance advocacy priorities, including materials creation and resources
  • Interview new volunteers to determine how their interests and needs best interface with the Lung Association’s advocacy efforts and opportunities
  • Identify recruitment and engagement opportunities to better engage underserved communities
  • Build and utilize a strong infrastructure to support volunteer engagement, including creating partnerships between state advocacy staff and volunteers
  • Serve on interdepartmental teams and complete other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Three to five years of strong, substantive work experience in patient engagement, knowledge of lung health policy, volunteer engagement, grassroots advocacy, or political organizing/campaigns
  • Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, health policy, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and work experience, required
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining collaborative functions with interdivisional teams and across national and local office locations, problem solve, thrive under pressure, perform multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Organized with attention to detail, accuracy, and quality
  • Team player with a positive attitude; comfortable working with all levels of staff
  • Flexibility to work occasional irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, with some overnights possible; must have a valid Driver’s license
  • Ability to lift approximately 25 lbs. (supplies)
  • Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office, and familiarity with database programs and social media

Compensation

Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. The target hiring range for this position is $56,500 to $63,000 per annum.

  • Paid Leave – 10 vacation days in the first year (15 days thereafter), 2 personal days and 15 sick days per year, as well as 12 company-paid holidays per year. We also offer Paid Parental Leave for eligible employees.
