Brief Description
The Senior Director, Policy, Strategic Alliances, and Global Advocacy is a senior-level position reporting to the Vice President, Policy and Advocacy. This role is crucial in proactively advancing our organization’s two strategic themes: Advance the Specialty and Advance Laboratory Quality Worldwide.
The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in policy development and federal and international advocacy to support our mission of promoting excellence in pathology and laboratory medicine.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop CAP policy as it relates to pathologists and the healthcare system.
- Advise CAP staff and members on advocacy strategy impacting the practice of pathology with a focus on CAP’s core accreditation and proficiency testing businesses.
- Develop and maintain strategic alliances, including consultants, to proactively advance the CAP’s advocacy agenda and strategic plan.
- Establish and maintain relationships between CAP and experts at federal agencies.
- Provide strategic guidance to our Laboratory Quality Team on the impact of regulatory changes on CAP business.
- Partner with the International Sales team to advocate for the CAP on a global level.
- Collaborate with other staff teams to promote CAP strategic themes as needed.
Specific Duties
Primary duties and responsibilities:
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting pathology and laboratory medicine.
- Draft position papers, testimony, and regulatory comments on behalf of the organization as needed in conjunction with other policy staff and member groups.
- Represent the organization at meetings with policymakers, regulators, and partner organizations.
- Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in government agencies, Congress, and other professional associations in related industries.
- Prepare and deliver presentations on policy issues to internal teams and external audiences.
- Contribute to the development of the organization’s annual advocacy agenda and strategic plan.
- Provide regular updates and reports on regulatory activities and their impact to leadership and members.
- Collaborate with the strategic communications team to develop messaging and materials for advocacy initiatives.
- Assist in the preparation of grant proposals and reports related to advocacy projects.
- Research emerging policy issues and their potential impact on the profession and on the CAP’s business.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive strategic plan for regulatory activity, aligning with organizational goals and industry trends.
- Brief CAP leadership and staff regularly on key issues, emerging trends, and potential impacts on the organization and its members.
- Manage and engage the CAP Policy Roundtable, including Policy Roundtable staff.
Knowledge/Skills Required/Preferred
Personal:
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to analyze complex policy issues and translate them for various audiences.

- 8-10 years of experience in federal advocacy, lobbying, domestic and international affairs.
- Strong strategic thinking abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work well with external partner groups.
- Demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain strategic relationships.
- In-depth knowledge of federal healthcare and state-level health policymaking.
- Fluency in advocacy work and legislative processes.
Technical:

Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in public policy, healthcare administration, or related field preferred.
Experience:
- 8-10 years of experience in federal advocacy, lobbying, and domestic and international affairs.
- Strong strategic thinking abilities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work well with external partner groups.
- Demonstrated capacity to develop and maintain strategic relationships.

Additional Criteria
Location and Work Requirements:
- Based in Washington, DC.
- Some weekend work required.
- Travel expected as needed for advocacy and partnership activities.
Salary Range:
$185,436 – $241,110
