Job Brief

Advocacy and Communication Position – Washington DC

Advocates and communicates SRP policy positions on legislative issues pending before the U.S. Congress and Executive branch. Supports the Senior Director of Federal Affairs by identifying emerging federal legislative and regulatory issues that may impact Salt River Project’s electric customers, water shareholders, employees, and elected officials; assist in the development and implementation of governmental affairs strategies to achieve corporate goals and objectives, including but not limited to the following areas: energy, water, environmental and tax policies.

Job Responsibilities

– Effectively articulate and communicate SRP’s position on federal legislative issues to members of Congress, their staff, and other key decision makers in the public policy process. Secure meetings with congressional offices and the executive branch to advocate for SRP policy positions.

– Work with trade associations and internal teams (and subject matter experts) to understand and prioritize key legislative and regulatory issues as well as collaborate in the development of SRP policy positions.

– Produce written communications and report summaries based on legislative, policy, and industry developments and open-source research.

– Maintain a strong network of contacts on Capitol Hill, the executive branch, and external groups.

– Remain current on industry issues and communicate relevant developments to management in a timely manner. Significant reading and ability to assimilate information on policy issues, trade press content, coalition and trade association activities, industry trends, and white paper article/journals.

– Must be able to work independently and possess a high self-initiative in carrying out job responsibilities. Requires excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Education

Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree plus an additional 36 graduate level college semester hours from an accredited institution in an area of specialty.

Experience

A minimum of 6 years of Capitol Hill, federal agency, government relations, or similar experience interacting with legislative and regulatory policy. Legislative aide on Capitol Hill or equivalent position within the executive branch is preferred. Previous advocacy experience and background in energy, water, tax, or environmental issues is a plus. Must possess a network of contacts on Capitol Hill, a demonstrated understanding of the legislative process, and strong written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Information

– Job will require registering as a federal lobbyist.

– Maintains a clear understanding of SRP strategies and business objectives by active involvement with key management team members to ensure the appropriate linkage of business strategies and governmental issues.

– Flexibility to adjust schedule to meet job demands with a corporate headquarters that is two to three time zones away.

– Some travel is required, as is attending some evening events.
