This is a hybrid role in our Washington, DC office (Tuesday – Thursday) and Monday and Friday work from home.

 

We are seeking to hire a proactive team player for the Office of Governmental Affairs who will engage in policy education and advocacy activities with Congress and federal agencies on behalf of New York Life. The position will cover federal public policy issues related to individual disability insurance; group and association insurance benefits (e.g., life, disability and supplemental products, paid family medical leave); other issues under the jurisdiction of the Department of Labor, including fiduciary regulations and the classification of workers; as well as other issues as assigned. This position will be based in Washington, D.C., and will report to the Senior Vice President & Head of Governmental Affairs.

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for consulting with New York Life’s business experts and state and federal governmental affairs colleagues, as well as relevant trade associations and coalitions, to develop and implement strategies to achieve legislative and regulatory outcomes that are favorable to the interests of New York Life and its policyholders.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor assigned issue areas; proactively provide timely substantive and political analysis, updates and memos on related developments.
  • Working closely with NYL executives and the governmental affairs team, develop and implement NYL’s legislative and regulatory strategy and agenda on assigned issues.
  • Engage with trade associations, other lobbyists and coalitions on assigned issues.
  • Advocate before congressional offices and federal agencies on assigned issue areas.
  • Attend PAC events and provide input into the strategy related to New York Life’s PAC budget and candidate disbursements.
  • Assist other members of the governmental affairs team on priority issues and tasks.

Essential Requirements and Experience:

  • Experience in a legislative, regulatory or governmental affairs environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with insurance-related public policy issues preferred.
  • Ability to analyze legislative and regulatory proposals.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including comfort with significant writing responsibilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interface with senior NYL executives and public officials.
  • Undergraduate degree.  Relevant advanced degree is desirable.

Salary range: $115,000-$160,000

Overtime eligible: Exempt
