Caterpillar is seeking a highly motivated and experienced government affairs professional to represent Caterpillar’s interests before federal and international governmental entities with an emphasis on climate and energy transition legislative and regulatory issues. The position represents the company with industry and trade organizations in shaping and influencing public policy and is a key member of Caterpillar’s International and Federal Governmental Affairs team. The candidate must have 10-15 years of experience working with Congress, federal agencies (regulatory & policy), US energy-related associations/coalition or corporate, and proven relationships and knowledge of energy related legislative and interagency processes.
The position is based in the Washington, DC office of Caterpillar, requires some travel and the candidate must be willing to work evenings to attend political and other events. What You Will Do:
The position requires strong leadership and communications skills, collaboration on policy development and priority setting with the business and advocacy expertise to work with key external government stakeholders on energy and climate policy and legislative issues. The manager will be responsible for identifying emerging legislative issues/policy trends, providing deep policy expertise and strategic thinking on how to best approach and navigate the challenges and opportunities on energy transition. The position will serve as the expert to help manage energy incentives – working closely with the business to support our customers and other key business stakeholders. The manager will collaborate with the business, as a resource of information on the external policy environment and a coordinator for input on key messages to stakeholders for Caterpillar. The role will contribute to energy transition, climate and sustainability messaging development to support corporate efforts and communication tools and reports. The manager will serve as a company-wide resource on climate and energy policies in Congress and the Administration by providing briefing materials and timely updates and reports – with a special focus on trade and industry association board memberships.
What You Have:
- Government Affairs Management: 10-15 years of extensive federal policy experience and international government affairs expertise, deep subject matter knowledge, long term relationship building, strong political acumen to navigate challenging issues.
- Effective Communications: Must be a strong advocate for company positions, possessing excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Relationship Building: Must exhibit ability to develop long-term relationships and enlist the support of key governmental leaders, serve as the liaison with coalitions and industry associations and provide support and counsel to our business leaders who serve on trade and industry association boards.
- Resource Management: Ability to manage multiple projects with minimal supervision and strong strategic skills.
- Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Effective in managing complexity and dealing with ambiguity to arrive at pragmatic solutions.
