Overview

As a key member of the North American External Affairs Team, this role will be responsible for developing and executing a focused strategy that leverages external stakeholders, including federal, state, and local government officials, to support FMC’s business interests, including U.S. commercial products, U.S. manufacturing facilities, and FMC’s Stine Research Center. Reporting to the Director of External Affairs, North America, the ideal candidate will be a solid relationship builder, external influencer, and exceptional partner to their FMC colleagues, including executive leaders. The role will position FMC externally as a leader in innovation, corporate responsibility, sustainability, and our product portfolio as necessary for global food security and stability in agricultural production. The role will be a registered federal lobbyist and will advocate on behalf of the company to accomplish policy, regulatory, and commercial objectives.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Leverage relationships with local and state officials: Build on FMC’s network of government and regulatory agencies, economic development officers at state and federal levels, governor offices, and secretaries of agriculture to protect and support our license to operate, market access, policy, and regulatory needs.
  • Grassroots and NGO’s Engagement: Effectively lead and coordinate external advocacy efforts, creating a strong network of NGO allies and stakeholders to support our license to operate for products and company assets. Build coalitions, participate in fly-ins, education sessions, industry networking events.
  • Monitoring and reporting on political and policy landscape: Work with Regional Business Managers (RBMs) to understand challenges, opportunities, and impacts on FMC’s commercial business, manufacturing sites, and integrated supply chain. Engage with government officials to support agency and congressional outreach in coordination with FMC colleagues. Engage with grower and industry organizations’ policy teams, participate on relevant committees to maximize advocacy efforts. Develop reporting and feedback loops to bring value to FMC leaders.
  • Political Action Committee: Support the FMC employee Political Action Committee, the Good Government Program (GGP), by helping to develop and launch solicitation programs, present to GPP Members on important elections, attend fundraisers.

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Agribusiness, Agricultural Sciences, Business

Qualifications

  • The ideal candidate will have 6+ years of experience in a combination of corporate government affairs, state/federal government, state/federal legislative branch or regulatory agency, or external affairs consultant for the chemical or agriculture industry.
  • Expertise in the policy and regulatory process in the U.S. and how these can influence and impact business continuity and growth, and the geopolitical landscape.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of the impact government and key external stakeholders have on the agricultural industry, especially related to FMC’s innovative crop protection product portfolio.
  • Direct experience within agriculture, life sciences, or other highly regulated industry a must.
  • Excellent interpersonal & influencing skills, proven relationship starter.
  • Strong professional presence, solid written and presentation skills, ability to self-serve content development.
  • Ability to synthesize complex technical information and regulatory policy to drive outcomes.
  • Strong project management and organization skills with the ability to be both a self-starter and trusted collaborator.
  • Willingness to travel regularly and attend events during and after business hours on a routine basis.

Location Requirements

  • This position is on-site in FMC’s Washington, DC office.
  • Hybrid work schedule possible with manager approval (minimum 3 in-office days).
