Senior Vice President, Public Policy and Government Relations

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the world’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals, is seeking a visionary and experienced Senior Vice President, Public Policy and Government Relations to increase visibility, enhance relationships with lawmakers and relevant stakeholders, and create a positive image of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics as the leader in food, nutrition, and health policies and promotion. Reporting to the Chief Mission, Impact Strategy Officer, the DC-based Senior Vice President, Public Policy and Government Relations will lead the development and execution of nutrition and dietetics advocacy strategies for the Academy. This role involves identifying, implementing, and tracking regulatory and legislative health policy priorities at the federal and state level that enhance the professional standing of dietitians, promote Medical Nutrition Therapy, ensure food and nutrition security and access, and increase understanding and support for critical issues in food, nutrition and health.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Chief, Mission, Impact and Strategy Officer and others to ensure cohesive and coordinated execution of policy and advocacy priorities across the Academy.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with key policymakers, health care organizations, and other stakeholders to advance policy goals and enhance the Academy’s visibility and position as a key stakeholder in relevant policy debates. Represent the Academy and effectively communicate the organization’s policy positions and advocacy efforts.
  • Identify and analyze key policy issues and emerging opportunities, providing insights and developing recommendations; prepare presentations, draft/edit policy documents, testimony, and other materials to support policy and advocacy initiatives and priorities.
  • Assist in development and execution of strategic Policy and Advocacy initiatives aligned with the Academy’s overall mission and goals. Routinely monitor and report on the progress of advocacy efforts, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives/priorities.
  • Ensure that the Academy’s legislative and regulatory programs are aligned with the strategic plan and priorities and are in compliance with all federal and state requirements.
  • Provide expert advice/counsel and leadership on state and federal government relations matters related to dietetics and food, nutrition and health.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in political science, public health/policy, or any other related field is required. RDN preferred but not required.
  • 10+ years of relevant professional experience in health policy, public affairs, or academic research required. Demonstrated expertise in food and nutrition insecurity, access, and equity highly desired.
  • Ability to develop and articulate a long-term policy and advocacy strategy that aligns with the overall priorities of the organization.
  • Capitol Hill or other federal policy experience is required.
  • Experience working alongside public affairs firms, showcasing the ability to leverage external expertise to reach federal policy goals and provide guidance on state/local initiatives.
  • Proficiency in navigating and resolving conflicts effectively, maintaining a positive atmosphere and strengthening relationships among staff teams, volunteer leaders, and association members.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and a team-oriented attitude.
  • Decision-making acumen to effectively assess return on investment of time and resources while considering input from various sources and perspectives.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing organizational and business environments, encouraging innovation and responsiveness within strategies and teams.
  • Understanding of and respect for diverse perspectives and backgrounds, fostering an inclusive environment that values cross-team expertise and contributions.
  • Strong understanding of budgeting, financial performance, and human resource allocation as it relates to managing teams and projects.
  • Experience in mentoring leaders and senior team members, providing guidance while empowering them to take ownership of their work.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead, supervise, and motivate a team of policy professionals.
