State Government Affairs Advocate
Responsible for serving as the company’s principal state government affairs advocate and representing the company’s position on legislation to elected representatives, officials, and staff in regulatory agencies and the executive branch for an assigned geographic area or region.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain strong external relationships with state and local policymakers, industry groups, and patient and professional organizations within a specified geographic area or region.
- Ensure all engagement is conducted in compliance with our code of conduct and all applicable state and local lobbying laws and regulations.
- Implement strategies and tactics to shape and influence state policies through a combination of direct lobbying and legislative coalition-building.
- Participate in political fundraising events and the company’s PAC activity.
- Lead project initiatives and facilitate collaboration with a team of legislative and alliance development consultants and lobbyists to provide direction on approaches and deliver results.
- Develop relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders, including industry groups, companies, think tanks, business trade associations, and patient/provider groups to advance the company’s agenda.
- Represent the company at key state/national stakeholder meetings and engage with key external partners to identify opportunities for collaboration to advance common policy priorities.
- Work closely with various internal business units to provide strategic counsel, including providing regular updates, conducting briefings, presenting at internal meetings, and staffing senior leadership during state engagements.
- Collaborate with the internal cross-functional advocacy team to execute the strategic and tactical plan and identify opportunities for engagement with external partners in a constantly changing environment.
Job Specifications
Typically has the following skills or abilities:
- Master’s or Juris Doctorate degree preferred.
- Eight years of experience working within state government, government affairs/advocacy, health policy, or relevant industry experience.
- Optical industry and managed vision care experience preferred.
- Experience engaging with stakeholders and navigating political relationships to drive policy agendas.
- Ability to move quickly and navigate multiple projects over short and long-time horizons.
- Intuitive understanding of the intersection between policy and business strategy/outcomes.
- Business acumen, including a keen understanding of legislative and regulatory processes and impacts on business units.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex policy issues to diverse audiences.
- Excellent judgment regarding strategic policy priorities, considering the political and communications landscape.
- Ability to work independently as well as with a team and produce timely, high-quality work with limited supervision.
- Ability to travel up to 40% required.
Preferred Skills
- Role expected to cover California and Pacific Northwest.
Compensation
Salary Range: $150,000.00 – $200,000.00
Applicable salary ranges may differ across markets. Actual pay will be determined based on experience and other job-related factors permitted by law.
