The American College of Physicians (ACP) is seeking an Associate, State Health Policy and Advocacy for our Washington, DC office. ACP, a national organization of internal medicine physicians with headquarters in Philadelphia, is the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States with 163,000 members worldwide. This is a full-time hybrid position with two days per week in the Washington, DC office required.

The Associate, State Health Policy and Advocacy will be responsible for collaborating with state chapters to identify state legislation impacting internal medicine physicians and patient care, supporting chapters’ grassroots advocacy, providing written feedback and guidance to state chapters on state-based policies and legislation, and facilitating ACP chapter and member engagement in advocacy at the national level.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Proactively identify and monitor high-profile policies that affect both the federal and state governments in key areas of interest to the College.
  • Assist state chapters with:
    • Analyzing state-based policies and legislation.
    • Forming coalitions or working jointly with other associations and organizations at the national and state level to advocate for issues of common interests.
    • Developing and participating in state-based advocacy campaigns.
    • Supporting chapters’ state lobby day events using guidance and best practices on federal and state advocacy as developed by ACP National.
  • Providing updated materials and resources posted online for members’ use in advocating before their state legislatures and/or gubernatorial offices.
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of ACP policies relative to state-based issues.
  • Coordinate with ACP’s Legislative Affairs staff to increase member engagement in advocacy among the state chapters.
  • Serve as a point of contact for state chapters inquiries and requests for support from ACP National staff on state legislative issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s in public health or public policy preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in grassroots and state-level health care advocacy, including but not limited to coalition-building, organizing lobby days at the state and national level, and working in a health care advocacy role.
  • Ability to understand and analyze complex legislative and regulatory issues.
  • Must be able to provide written feedback to state chapters on legislative inquiries and requests and to develop appropriate and timely responses.
  • Must be able to draft materials to be posted online for chapter members’ benefit, to assist them in advocacy and to engage more members to participate in advocating before state legislative bodies.
  • Demonstrated ability to write quickly and effectively in various formats and meet deadlines. Spelling, punctuation, sentence structure and writing are essential, and must be proficient in a variety of styles, from creative to professional.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required to interact with leaders and members of the College, including state chapters, public officials, and staff.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneDrive preferred.
