March 20, 2019
2 p.m.–4:15 p.m. ET
Washington, DC or Virtual

“Tear down this wall.” “Yes we can.” People don’t spontaneously join an organization or speak out on an issue. It requires individuals that can concisely and convincingly convey how complex policy issues affect citizens’ daily lives. Our persuasive writing workshop will help you produce content that increases engagement, sways undecideds, and makes people remember your organization’s name.

Agenda

2:00 p.m. Principles of Persuasive Writing

Public affairs and advocacy professionals wear two hats when writing: translator and persuader. How can you tailor messages for different constituencies and distill complex policy issues into messages that your audience can understand? Hear from a communications expert who, in addition to sharing examples of strong persuasive writing, will discuss:

  • Developing a simple and powerful message that resonates with your target audience
  • Identifying and developing a persuasive policy argument
  • Strategies for sharpening your prose and removing industry jargon from your advocacy writing

3:00 p.m. Networking Break

3:15 p.m. Putting it Into Practice: Crafting Persuasive Op-eds, Calls-to-Action and Social Media Alerts

While public affairs professionals are constantly writing, they’re rarely trained as professional writers. This session will delve into the most powerful persuasive tools: the op-ed, the email action alert, and the social media alert.

Join our communications expert for a session on:

  • Best practices for crafting effective op-ed pitches
  • Crafting a compelling action alert or advocacy call-to-action message
  • Understanding the elements and process of crafting a newsworthy op-ed or letter to the editor
  • Creating social content that can motivate an audience to take action
