Associate Director, Health Policy & Payment
The American Academy of Dermatology is seeking an Associate Director, Health Policy & Payment located in our Rosemont, IL office. This role is responsible for developing strategies and resources to advocate for the practice of dermatology and serving as a liaison between the specialty of dermatology and private sector entities (payers, employers, business coalitions, etc.) involved in the delivery and payment of dermatologic services.
The Associate Director will monitor, gather, and analyze data related to the role of dermatologists and other physicians in the delivery of dermatologic services. You will collaborate with State Affairs, Practice Management teams, and others to develop content for member and resident education on payer coverage and reimbursement activities, as well as develop material for Academy leadership in formulating positions, policy, and reports.

Responsibilities
Payer Advocacy: Manage the Academy’s payer advocacy initiatives with private payers, Medicare administrative contractors, insurers, employers, and health systems. Work with stakeholders to advance coverage and payment policies.
Policy Formation: Provide expertise and guidance in the formation of Academy policy and strategy regarding private sector entities influencing the treatment of skin, hair, and nails.
Monitoring & Analysis: Monitor, analyze, and contribute to organizational positions related to the impact of proposed regulatory or payer policies.
Relationship Management: Develop and maintain relationships with representatives of payers and other stakeholders. Expand networks with health and medical organizations addressing private sector and workforce issues.
Employer Engagement: Oversee the execution of engagement with employers on reimbursement issues. Guide and mentor staff to build relationships with employer-based organizations.
Communication: Ensure communication of regulatory and payer policies to membership through meetings, website updates, and member communication vehicles.
Collaboration: Work with the Science and Quality and Practice Management departments to achieve initiatives and produce quality deliverables within budget and timelines.
Member Support: Monitor and oversee Academy responses to member inquiries on payer issues.
Strategic Goals: Assist the Director with strategic and financial goals. Help develop departmental budgets, monitor expenses, and assist with forecasting reports.
Requirements
Education: Bachelor’s degree required (preferably in public health, government, or political science). A Doctor of Jurisprudence, Master’s, or other advanced degree is preferred.
Experience: Minimum of 10 years’ health policy or payer relations experience (e.g., Federal agency, association/non-profit, or insurance company).
Management: Minimum of 6 years of people management experience, including direct supervision and coaching.
Collaboration: Ability to participate as an active member of a team and work outside formal lines of authority.
Communication: Effective verbal, nonverbal, and written communication skills with sufficient business vocabulary.
Coping Skills: Ability to handle ambiguity and stress resulting from conflicting goals.
Critical Thinking: Ability to analyze complex information and develop plans to address issues.
Decision Making: Exercise discretion and independent judgment to determine the appropriate course of action.
Finance & Accounting: Ability to assist with preparing and monitoring budgets and expenses.
Staff Development: Mentoring and coaching others to help them realize their potential.
Team Player: Ability to interact effectively with varied stakeholders, including physicians.
