Overview

Microsoft has an immediate opportunity for a highly skilled, experienced government affairs professional to join the Customer Security and Trust Organization as Director, Cybersecurity Policy and Diplomacy. The Cybersecurity Policy and Diplomacy team’s mission is to work with governments, the private sector, and civil society to advocate for and implement policies aimed at achieving a more secure cyberspace, both domestically and at the international level.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration, Technology, Law, Liberal Arts, Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years work experience in government affairs, corporate affairs, public policy, government, or related area OR equivalent experience
  • Experience in developing and managing strategic relationships to advocate and influence public/technology policy priorities and a proven track record engaging with government officials, political, civil society and corporate stakeholders

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Excellent understanding of the wider UN cyber norms landscape to help inform policy considerations and opportunities for the company, coupled with a proven track record of supporting the concept of meaningful multistakeholder diplomacy
  • Excellent understanding of geopolitics, coupled with the ability to clearly communicate complex geopolitical, technical and policy issues in a nuanced manner to different audiences
  • Demonstrated ability to drive impactful campaigns to address complex challenges, individually and as part of a wider, matrixed team
  • Flexibility and willingness to shift priorities and adapt to new policy needs, leveraging government affairs background and expertise
  • A collaborative and team-first mindset and a desire to learn and grow

Government Affairs IC5 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $132,200 – $258,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $165,800 – $278,900 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and engage on behalf of Microsoft on US digital diplomacy initiatives consistent with Microsoft principles and practices
  • Shape US digital diplomacy approaches in partnership with colleagues around the world, as well as external industry partners and other stakeholders. This includes representing Microsoft in relevant industry associations, external events, and direct engagements
  • Advocate for relevant policy issues and develop, drive and positively impact corresponding campaigns in collaboration with internal stakeholders and global Microsoft colleagues on priority issues, strategies, and/or programs
  • Participate in internal/external events and support executive engagements in the US and across the globe
  • Represent Microsoft on digital diplomacy initiatives in industry fora and public private partnerships
  • Proactively build and maintain impactful stakeholder network in the US and elsewhere to better inform and execute Microsoft’s objectives in key priority areas and position the company as key partner for US and global policymakers
  • Help assess and create internal awareness of key digital diplomacy initiatives and their implications for Microsoft
