The Director will conceive, organize, and direct a wide range of projects for the Government Affairs and Community Relations department, including oversight of government, neighborhood, and community relations programs. The Director will develop and enhance initiatives that support the Los Angeles Dodgers’ position in the community and with government entities. The job requires collaboration with internal departments and key external stakeholders to integrate legislative priorities and social responsibility considerations into core decision-making and planning. The Director will cultivate and maintain relationships with government at the local, state, and federal level, associated authorities, business groups, the community, numerous internal departments, and various other external entities.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

Government Affairs

  • Lead the Dodgers’ efforts on public policy initiatives and interactions with public officials and their staff. This includes daily and/or weekly decision-making and planning with the Governor’s Office, Mayor’s Office, City Council, Board of Supervisors, LAPD, LAFD, LAUSD, Los Angeles Department of Public Health, and other City/State agencies on issues and public policy that directly affect the Dodgers.
  • Provide early identification of legislation, initiatives, programs, and issues that may affect the business operations and public policy goals of the Dodgers.
  • Lead implementation of transportation-related initiatives with internal stakeholders, Metro, and the LA Department of Transportation.
  • Direct efforts to expand the use of Dodger Stadium for civic engagements including Voting Centers, Job Fairs, or other related community service initiatives.
  • Direct non-baseball events in a manner that supports other baseball initiatives and builds support within the community and government.
  • Develop internal strategies and policies for political campaign contributions and direct Dodgers involvement as appropriate.
  • Manage, track, and process political campaign contributions.
  • Prepare budgets, cash flows, invoices, and related spreadsheets for the department.
  • Oversee department hiring and management of direct reports, including interns and fellows.

Community Affairs

  • Conceive the CR Annual Strategic Plan – including all MLB initiatives – and successfully execute annually using data-driven tools and quantitative analysis to measure and evaluate event impacts with the goal of growing and expanding community impacts on an annual basis.
  • Develop and supervise a team of four full-time staff and one game day employee in carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the community relations team including oversight of all community relations events.
  • Manage CR staff’s implementation of a multi-faceted community relations program including but not limited to the following initiatives:
    • Military Initiatives: flag ceremonies; reenlistments; Military Hero of the Game; military care packages; Opening Day; Memorial Day; 4th of July; Veteran’s Day Batting Practice; Navy Fleet Week; and coordinate color guards and flyovers for special games.
    • Educational Initiatives: Back to School initiatives and activations; Step Up to the Plate Attendance Program.
    • Health Initiatives: Dodger/UCLA Blue Wish program.
    • MLB Initiatives: Shred Hate/No Bully; Summer Slugger; Breaking Barriers Essay Contest; Player Give Back program; Pitch Hit & Run Championship; Playball clinics; Jackie Robinson Day; Roberto Clemente Day; LGBTQ Spirit Day, etc.
  • Manage CR-led pre-game and game day on-field activities including batting practice visits, meet & greet visits, auction experiences, and player support as needed.
  • Collaborate with the Vice President on Dodgers Public Relations strategy to identify appropriate opportunities to promote community and charitable efforts.
  • Regularly oversee and make direct decisions to carry out numerous Community Affairs functions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Neighborhood Relations

  • Direct Dodger efforts to engage the community in a manner that results in support of initiatives and programs supported by the Dodgers.
  • Along with the Vice President, represent the Dodgers’ organization at neighborhood committee meetings throughout the year to hear from community stakeholders, provide updates from the Dodgers, and engage in meaningful dialogue with attendees.

Business Development

  • Work across internal departments to develop legislative strategies for Dodgers’ operational and corporate social responsibility initiatives and projects.
  • Develop strategies, programs, and activations that generate revenue for the sponsorship and ticket sales teams.
  • Compose and edit a broad range of written materials, including Community Report, press releases, speeches, and talking points for Dodgers executives, staff, and coaches.

Basic Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Communications, Political Science, Public Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years previous experience in government and community relations, private sector, or non-profit field preferred, including 10 years of increasing management responsibility.
  • Proven track record working successfully in community marginalized groups, developing deep relationships with all community stakeholders as well as the City of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, and State of California public officials.
  • Ability to display independent judgment and evaluate new approaches to problem-solving.
  • Experience in creating and implementing training programs for the team and other partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects including partnering with other Dodgers teams and external stakeholders, creating a spirit of collaboration in a fast-paced environment.
  • Goal-oriented, self-starter with a strong work ethic and ability to perform multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work experience in crisis communication.
  • Demonstrate innovative thinking/spirit.
  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to interact and work with leadership, players, player families, and staff at every level.
  • Ability to develop relationships with internal and external customers (residents, civic and business leaders, and volunteers).
  • Spanish or other language skills beyond English is a plus.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
