American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers (AFPM) is a dynamic trade association representing high-tech American manufacturers of virtually the entire U.S. supply of gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, other fuels, and home heating oil, as well as the petrochemicals used as building blocks for thousands of vital products in daily life, from paints to plastics, space suits to solar panels, and medicines to mobile phones. As a national trade association representing American refineries and petrochemical companies, AFPM brings together staff, members, affiliates, and thought leaders at major conventions and smaller gatherings, both virtual and in-person, throughout the year.
#### Director, Government Relations

As we continue to grow and expand our reach, we are excited to announce an opening for a Director, Government Relations. The Director is responsible for advocacy before the U.S. Congress and the Executive Branch and assists in the development of policy and legislative positions. The Director manages federal legislative activities, public policies, and practices that impact AFPM and its members.
#### Responsibilities
– Initiates and maintains effective working relationships with Members of Congress, Congressional staff, Congressional Committees, Executive Branch officials and their staff.
– Sets up Congressional briefings to advocate and educate Congress about industry positions and goals to better acquaint them with industry operations and how AFPM members affect the overall economy.
– Monitors all federal developments of interest to the Association, both regulatory and legislative, and provides input for developing and maintaining Association positions by analyzing proposed legislative and regulatory actions.
– Partners with other departments to ensure coordination and consistency with AFPM legislative initiatives and messaging.
– Helps draft Congressional testimony, comments, presentations, and other Congressional materials. Serves as AFPM lead in responding to Congressional inquiries and providing relevant materials as required.
– Assists in securing, where appropriate, opportunities for AFPM CEO or other company official to testify before Congress on key industry issues.
– Works with the Vice President, Government Relations to position AFPM as the lead resource in Congress for refining, petrochemical, and midstream issues, while working closely with other AFPM departments and member companies to share information and pool resources in advocating Association positions.
– Performs other duties as assigned.
#### Qualifications
– 8 or more years’ experience working with energy and regulatory issues in a related association, industry, or congressional office.
– Knowledge of energy policy preferred.
– Ability to effectively work with and through committees to accomplish association’s goals.
– Strong communication skills evidenced by experience in communicating advocacy positions, including writing testimony or other advocacy related documents.
– Experience and connections working with members of the House, Senate, and Executive Branch officials.
– Demonstrated ability to think strategically about the policy, politics, and press of an issue and translate strategy into action.
– Ability to prioritize, plan, organize and carry out multiple assignments to achieve multiple objectives.
– Bachelor’s degree in a government relations related field, or equivalent experience.

Salary for this position is market-driven and based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
