The Public Relations Manager is responsible for providing strategic public relations counsel to GPS professionals and collaborating with marketing colleagues to implement integrated campaigns across Deloitte’s Government and Public Services (GPS) practice, which serves federal, state and local government agencies, as well as colleges and universities.

The Public Relations Manager oversees the GPS practice’s media relations strategy and planning initiatives that are coordinated with our marketing campaigns. The ideal candidate for this position will be a public relations pro with a demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of a matrix organization, coach leaders on media interviews, and be a resource for reporters covering the key issues that impact our business, our clients, our communities, and our society.

What You’ll Do

As the GPS Public Relations Manager, you will contribute to the growth and development of our organization in a variety of ways, including:

  • Serve as a strategic advisor to GPS business leaders and other key members of the practice.
  • Develop and execute public relations strategies that support GPS business priorities and strengthen Deloitte’s brand in the marketplace with current and prospective clients.
  • Collaborate closely with GPS marketing professionals, as well as other Deloitte industry PR leads, to ensure message consistency and media outreach alignment.
  • Manage our external public relations agency to ensure delivery of support that meets GPS business goals.
  • Build and/or strengthen relationships with key reporters, staying abreast of political and business news, reporters, and key areas of focus.
  • Proactively pitch GPS subject matter experts, thought leaders, original research, and client impact stories.
  • Connect frequently with marketing, account leaders, project teams, and other stakeholders to be aware of and understand our new technology solutions, client successes, and other notable milestones for potential stories.

The Team

The Public Relations Manager serves as part of the GPS Public Relations team and is a strategic advisor to key business leaders and stakeholders within the GPS practice. The role reports to the Government & Public Services Public Relations Leader.

Skills and Competencies

  • Deep understanding of government and public relations, with a strong background in media relations best practices, reporter engagement, and creative use of social media to amplify coverage.
  • Familiarity with government ecosystem including federal and state agencies, industry associations, and government oversight entities.
  • Experience working in coordination with government relations and public policy professionals at the federal and/or state level.
  • Successful management of external PR agencies.
  • Strong communicator, comfortable managing to results—provides strategic counsel, asks good questions, challenges the status quo, suggests alternatives, and articulates a compelling POV.
  • High level of comfort with ambiguity and fluid priorities; ability to manage multiple and complex priorities efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to make connections in a highly matrixed environment, with an eye on collaboration and integration, across all levels of the organization.
  • Strong listening and persuasive communication skills; ability to gain consensus through influence and pivot when warranted.
  • Excels at working in a virtual environment.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in public relations, with a focus on government, government-to-citizen marketing, and communications strategy and planning; professional services experience a bonus.
  • Undergraduate degree, ideally with a focus in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, or a related business field.
  • Deep understanding of public relations strategies and digital media strategies and tools.
  • Experience serving as an on-the-record spokesperson, working under tight deadlines, and serving multiple clients at once.
  • Strong writing, editing, and communications skills a necessity, as well as sound judgment.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship, now or at any time in the future.
  • This position may require very limited travel to attend team meetings.

For individuals assigned and/or hired to work in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Jersey City, Nevada, New York state, and Washington State, Deloitte is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This compensation range is specific to these locations and takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and organizational needs. At Deloitte, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current range is $84,300 to $155,400.

You may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
