The Sr. Manager, Global Public Relations, will develop strategic communications initiatives to enhance and protect the reputation of Boston Scientific as a leading global health care organization. The successful candidate is passionate about healthcare and is a strong storyteller with a proven-track record of driving top-tier media placements, creating compelling internal and external content, managing issues, and developing medical technology PR programs. Candidates must have the ability to manage multiple projects across a matrixed organization and work collaboratively with global communications colleagues, corporate functions and other PR teams/agencies. This individual will serve as a company spokesperson and a strategic counselor to senior executives.

The selected candidate must be willing to work in a hybrid capacity, spending 2-3 days per week on average at the company’s Marlborough, MA, Arden Hills, MN, or Maple Grove, MN office.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement corporate media relations plans in alignment with corporate reputation program strategy and healthcare industry trends. Develop strategic pitches associated with reputation programming. Work with corporate reputation team to extend storylines across communications channels.
  • Triage inbound media inquiries and counsel cross-functional comms teams on external / media relations strategies. Build and maintain close relationships with stature media outlets to secure positive coverage and ensure accuracy in reporting.
  • In partnership with communications colleagues in business units as well as regions outside the U.S., support the development and execution of external public relations programs for key business milestones.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional team members to create content and editorial strategies to complement key PR campaigns. Demonstrate an understanding of today’s communications environment across paid, earned, social and owned media.
  • Write and produce compelling content across diverse formats and channels, including articles, bylines, social media, website content, videos, infographics, etc.
  • Prepare executive communications including presentations, talking points, internal messages, social media posts and long-form content.
  • Work closely with Investor Relations on quarterly earnings communications and financial related events. Support business development communications.
  • Support issues management by working with appropriate functions to prepare messaging and counsel management on reputation/business impact.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders including ESG, regulatory affairs, operations, quality, R&D, HR, government affairs, investor relations, legal, finance and senior management.
  • Build and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders, including advocacy groups, and professional and industry organizations such as AdvaMed.
  • Connect external events and issues impacting the Medical Device industry and influence Boston Scientific’s communication strategies.
  • Define media relations and sponsored content scope of work and provide clear direction, ongoing feedback and ensure budget alignment with paid, agency and freelance partners.
  • Coach senior executives and spokespeople on delivery of key messages.
  • Set metrics to measure effectiveness of public relations and communications efforts.
  • Assist in shaping department policies and procedures and sharing best practices with global communications colleagues. Partner with Boston Scientific media leads and agencies in each region to share best practices and ensure consistent and locally relevant communications.  
  • Ensure proper adherence to all financial, administrative, and regulatory policies and ensure programs fall within budget parameters.

Required Qualifications

  • Accomplished communications/public relations professional with a minimum of 7 years communications experience with a global focus on healthcare (e.g., medical devices, medical technology, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English or another relevant area of study. 
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills. In-depth understanding of target audience and expertise in high-impact messaging to broad audiences. Ability to articulate complex information in simple and relatable terms.
  • Experience developing and managing high impact, multi-channel integrated communication strategies and plans in a regulated environment.
  • Proven and respected communications consultant with strong judgement and executive presence; experience working with and counseling at all levels of the organization, including senior leadership.
  • Ability to achieve results while balancing competing priorities, dealing with ambiguity, discretion; demonstrated success at working under deadlines with tight timeframes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent project management, organizational, planning and time management skills. 
  • Strong contacts and working relationships with a variety of top-tier media. Proven ability to place media stories and manage relationships with media.
  • Experience with international media and media landscapes.
  • Experience in issues management; exhibits anticipatory thinking.
  • Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills; drive to constantly improve through gathering feedback and measuring outcomes. 
  • Adept at working in a team environment while also displaying independence and initiative.
  • Demonstrates business acumen and fluency in topical health care news and industry trends, as well as a deep understanding of public perception and issues
