The Position

By joining our team in Renewables you will have the opportunity to:

  • Build relationships with sovereign tribal nations and native communities on behalf of Equinor and leverage this network of relationships in our project areas to disseminate information and support project development.
  • Work with tribes to identify tribal concerns and needs, such as workforce training and development; how to utilize existing programs and/or create new ones as well as provide Tribal outreach services for the project.
  • Engage and maintain relationship with the California Native American Heritage Commission.
  • Develop and upkeep the Native American Tribes Communications Plan (NATCP).
  • Serve as the primary contact to state and federal agencies for tribal issues during the development of the project, serve as liaison with government entities and Tribal governments on Native American issues.
  • Work with the Government Affairs team and internal and external stakeholders to formulate and execute company positions and strategies and in support of legislative efforts.
  • Support the project permitting teams as needed to advance state and federal environmental impact assessments and permit applications.
  • Coordinate Equinor involvement as needed in federal, state, local and community forums on matters related to tribal issues or interests.
  • Advocate internally to include Tribal communities in corporate social sustainability and human rights initiatives and coordinate tribal outreach and engagement efforts in support of these initiatives.
  • Develop materials or training for use by Equinor management and staff in building awareness of the needs and challenges faced by tribes and native communities. Arrange cultural sensitivity training for Equinor staff where appropriate.
  • Serve on project committees as requested and prepare reports regularly to management on status of major initiatives, agency rulemakings and similar proceedings, and activities.

  • 5+ years of relevant experience required.
  • At minimum a Bachelor’s degree required, can be in political science, environmental science, anthropology, archaeology, business or other related field.
  • Extensive advocacy, negotiation and communication skills, the ability to balance multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment. Effective verbal communications and written skills.
  • Excellent understanding of tribal nations, their history and governance, and their current priorities and challenges; experience working with tribal nations and their members; experience in developing strategic engagement plans; experience in coalition building with diverse interests to advance policy priorities; and a solid understanding of utility policy issues.
  • Experience with and knowledge of California central coast tribes preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AB-52 and the CEQA environmental review process for Tribal Stakeholders within the project area would be highly beneficial.
  • Certificate in Tribal Relations or equivalent a plus. Having a Native perspective or lived experience a plus.
  • Salary range $116,285 to $174,480.
