Summary
The Vice President of Government Affairs will report to the Executive Vice President (EVP). In this highly visible position, the successful candidate will leverage a background in politics, political consulting, public administration, and business to take a critical role in developing, nurturing, and maintaining outstanding relationships with all relevant community stakeholders including: City staff, elected officials, and other influential members of the community. The Vice President will apply that knowledge, experience and relationships to help the EVP and division facilities improve the business of the Company. This role will also be responsible for leading, mentoring and managing the team of Government Affairs Directors and Managers to achieve annual goals and objectives.
Job Description
Establishes and maintains good working relationships with key local and regional public sector leaders and their staffs, our member companies and organizations, and other community partners.
Monitors legislative and regulatory activities to promote the company’s market position. Responsible for gathering, interpreting, and informing management on potential business risks and opportunities in designated markets.
Possess a strong understanding of state and federal laws that govern industry practices.
Maintain awareness of legislation, competition and trends affecting industry. Report new information to executive team as it becomes available.
Provide input and support with the development of corporate strategies, policies and plans that align with government laws, regulations and standards.
Actively collaborates with executive management on new business pursuits.
Collaborate with business unit executive and facility managers to improve profitability of civic contracts and accounts.
Collaborate with other business managers and executives on Company goals and objectives.
Manage the team of directors and managers. Lead by example, personally demonstrating the values and behaviors expected of staff.
Attend city, business and community events as an Athens representative.
Provide knowledge and interpretation to the government affairs team regarding city political dynamics.
Analyze lost unfavorable business events and pursue corrective actions as directed.
Participate in regular department meetings.
Provide weekly and or monthly reports on all activities as directed.
Participate in annual department planning and budgeting.
Attend industry and public agency association meetings as directed.
Timely completion of all other assignments as directed by the Executive Vice President of Government Affairs.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Business Administration or related field.
- At least four years in politics as an elected official, or staff member.
- Possess strong analytical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills, the ability to speak and write persuasively and a proven track record of being able to work under tight deadlines.
- A high degree of emotional intelligence, displaying candor and integrity at all times.
- A willingness to work collaboratively by incorporating diverse perspectives and appropriately managing relationships.
- Ability to act independently and demonstrate sound business judgment.
- At least five years in business in a “front End” roll such as Sales, Marketing, or Public Relations.
- Experience with negotiating contracts.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word/Excel/Access/PowerPoint).
- Ability to perform physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Salary: $186,000 -$266,000
