$174,514.00 to $180,583.00 Annually
This position requires weekly in-office work (3 days) in our Washington D.C. office under a hybrid working model.

Position Summary:

The VP of Health Policy provides overarching strategic leadership for LeadingAge’s nursing home, skilled nursing facility, life plan community, assisted living, and related settings. They oversee LeadingAge’s regulatory and legislative analysis and advocacy work on related issues. The VP works closely with top leadership in the Department of Health and Human Services and other key federal agencies and leads staff who examine federal policy related to nursing homes, skilled nursing facilities, life plan communities, and similar settings.

The Vice President develops and maintains relationships with key policy makers and represents LeadingAge with Capitol Hill and other federal personnel. They lead advocacy efforts to educate and persuade opinion leaders on LeadingAge’s policy goals and guide Association policy education and outreach to state executives and members. The VP establishes relationships with senior leaders in national organizations and coalitions and provides strategic, tactical, and operational leadership to ensure programs and policies respond to member needs.

This position advances the LeadingAge strategic goal to amplify policy and public voice, ensuring that our voice is heard and trusted and that we are member-driven in creating a regulatory and legislative environment in which members can be successful.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads and supervises staff working on nursing home and life plan community policy, quality, and legislative affairs.

  • Serves on the senior leadership team of the Policy Department and collaborates on coordinated processes to maximize impact.

  • Develops and leads educational programs on trends in nursing home and life plan community policy.

  • Speaks at events and oversees team presentations.

  • Represents LeadingAge with stakeholders including media and other associations.

  • Maintains relationships with federal and/or state policy makers.

  • Analyzes and summarizes health policy research and reports.

  • Maintains knowledge of regulatory and legislative environments affecting members.

  • Participates in the development of new products and thought leadership.

  • Manages collaboration opportunities with other organizations.

  • Coordinates and directs development of LeadingAge priorities regarding NH, LPC, and Medicare/Medicaid policy.

  • Identifies legislative and regulatory reform opportunities and advocates for them.

  • Establishes systems for review of proposed regulations and legislation with member input.

  • Ensures representation in key advisory bodies impacting membership.

  • Promotes collaboration across aging services.

  • Ensures timely response to policy opportunities.

  • Responds to member concerns and identifies broad impact issues and solutions.

  • Works with state associations and members on relevant policy issues.

  • Models LeadingAge values of community, catalyst, courage, and stewardship.

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge:

  • Master’s degree in public health, public affairs, public policy, or a JD, with a minimum of ten years’ experience in aging services, policy, government affairs, or law, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Strong leadership, advocacy, negotiation, communication, and planning skills.

  • Ability to analyze and summarize federal legislation and regulations.

  • Knowledge of policy issues and processes affecting aging service providers.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Proven ability to lead and mentor staff toward organizational goals.

  • Initiative, judgment, and teamwork ability required.

  • Nursing home administrator experience or credential preferred but not required.

ADA Specifications:

  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly.

  • Capability to translate and produce extensive written communications.

  • Ability to travel locally and nationally for meetings.

  • Frequent computer and phone use.

  • Mobility during conferences and meetings.

  • May involve prolonged sitting/standing.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary range for this full-time (37.5-hour work week), exempt, D.C.-based position is $174,514 to $180,583. Salary may vary depending on experience, skills, geographic location, and other factors. For candidates outside the DMV, salary will be adjusted using the Economic Research Institute’s Geographic Assessor Tool.
