Full Job Description

Public Policy & Government Affairs Manager

White Coat Waste Project (WCW)

Do you love puppies and kittens? Do you hate taxes and wasteful government spending? Do you sweat the details, enjoy working with a team, and dig a fast-paced startup culture?

If you answered yes, read on: this is your dream career opportunity. We’re looking for a Public Policy & Government Affairs Manager to help us build the future… today.

What We’re Looking For

A Public Policy & Government Affairs Manager to manage WCW’s federal government relations and public policy initiatives. They will work remotely from home and closely with the Senior Vice President of Advocacy and Public Policy and other remote staff and consultants. Must be fully committed to our bipartisan and strictly single-issue mission of ending wasteful government spending on animal experiments, and demonstrate strong interest in issue advocacy, politics, public affairs, animal advocacy, or pro-liberty causes.

Why You Want This Job

WCW is a nonprofit, bipartisan government watchdog featured in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and the New York Times. Our mission is to expose and close the U.S. government’s $20 billion animal testing business. We’ve rescued, positively impacted, and saved 29,000 lives, cut $99 million in wasteful spending, and shut down 114 labs and experiments. Our strategy? Stop the Money. Stop the Madness!

WCW is the most effective organization for getting animals out of labs. WCW closed the U.S. government’s largest cat laboratory: USDA’s “Kitten Slaughterhouse.” WCW slashed FDA’s monkey testing by 63%. WCW ended all painful experiments on dogs at the Dept. of Veterans Affairs—the first group to shutter canine labs across a federal agency—and closed all of NIH’s in-house dog labs. WCW won the first-ever federal policies to retire and release survivors from U.S. government labs. WCW exposed NIH’s cat experiments at a Kremlin-run lab and united the GOP and President Biden to de-fund all animal testing in Russia. WCW investigators uncovered—and stopped—Dr. Fauci’s tests on beagle puppies. WCW first exposed how U.S. taxpayers funded the Wuhan lab—and rallied President Trump to cut the lab leak center and probable origin of COVID. No other animal protection group has shut down government primate labs in a decade; federal dog labs in nearly two decades; or government cat labs in at least four decades. WCW isn’t just in the business of stopping animal testing. We’re in the business of making history.

Responsibilities

The Public Policy & Government Affairs Manager is responsible for specific duties that include (but aren’t limited to) the following:

  • Lobbying: Manage day-to-day lobbying and conduct meetings with staffers for Members of Congress (MOCs). Secure sponsors and co-sponsors for WCW-backed legislation and win support for WCW’s public policy initiatives.
  • Relationship Building: Manage and strengthen WCW’s existing relationships with MOCs and Capitol Hill staff. Find and cultivate new relationships to advance WCW’s public policy priorities.
  • Policy Development: Assist in the drafting of legislation, appropriations language, and sign-on letters, and help develop and execute other policy initiatives.
  • Events: Organize Congressional briefings, virtual events, and Hill events to educate MOCs and staff.
  • Research: Research MOC offices, federal agencies, and policy issues. Assist with white papers, reports, and other relevant research, including reviewing academic journal articles and public records.
  • Writing: Draft content that summarizes and advances our policy priorities for various audiences, including Capitol Hill offices, coalition partners, other key stakeholders, donors, and the general public. Draft talking points for day-to-day lobbying meetings and interviews.
  • Campaign Coordination: Coordinate with other WCW departments to maximize visibility and build support for public policy initiatives.
  • Miscellaneous: Additional relevant project management and duties, as assigned.
