National Grid is hiring a US Public Policy Manager. This role can be based in our Washington, DC, Boston, MA, Brooklyn, NY, Syracuse, NY, or Albany, NY offices. This is a hybrid role that combines office and remote work.

Job Purpose

Reporting to the Director of Public Policy, the Public Policy Manager is part of a team that provides strategic direction to inform National Grid’s public policy priorities, partnering closely with Government Affairs and Stakeholder Engagement to develop and implement policy and advocacy strategy within Corporate Affairs.

The Public Policy team pairs policy domain and advocacy expertise and serves as a key fulcrum for collaboration on policy analysis, development, and prioritization with leaders and SMEs across National Grid’s business units and functions.

The Public Policy Manager is responsible for contributing to strategies that align the company’s public policy objectives across the US, anticipate emerging trends, and proactively shape opportunities to drive impactful policy outcomes.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assist in the development of National Grid’s public policy strategy, collaborating with colleagues across the business to develop creative and actionable policy positions that align with business objectives and are tuned to the external environment.
  • Contribute to a culture of collaboration, innovation, and high performance.
  • Leverage data and technology to anticipate structural policy trends and critical issues to identify opportunities and risks for National Grid.
  • Provide timely updates and analysis to internal stakeholders on key policy developments and trends.
  • Monitor and analyze state and federal energy policy trends, providing insights and recommendations to inform internal discussions and strategies.
  • Support the preparation of policy briefs, reports, and presentations for senior leadership, summarizing key findings and implications for the company.
  • Collaborate on a set of processes that deliver aligned policy platforms and priorities, as well as proactive and efficient issue management that tracks progress and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with internal teams, including Government Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, and Corporate Communications to ensure a cohesive approach to policy, thought leadership, and integrated advocacy campaigns—advising on policy, communication, and stakeholder strategies.
  • Help shape policy messaging and communication materials.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external stakeholders influencing the policy environment.
  • As required, represent National Grid in external discussions, forums, and collaborative initiatives to enhance reputation and promote policy positions.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification.
  • Significant policymaking experience in government, government relations, or public affairs, think tanks, political campaigns, or related areas—preferably in energy or utilities sectors.
  • Strong understanding of energy policy, regulatory processes, and the political landscape.
  • Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to assess complex policy issues and develop actionable recommendations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience in preparing advocacy materials and communicating policy positions effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills, capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and familiarity with policy analysis tools.

Salary

  • $122k – $143k a year in Washington, DC and Boston, MA.
  • $130k – $153k a year in Brooklyn, NY.
  • $108k – $127k a year in Albany, NY and Syracuse, NY.
