Assistant Director and Head of Advocacy and Government Relations
The Assistant Director and Head of Advocacy and Government Relations at the Alliance holds a crucial role in advancing the organization’s goals. The position involves advocacy work for the U.S. international exchange community and the management of member services.
Core Responsibilities
Government Relations/Legislative Advocacy
- Focus on advancing Alliance federal legislative priorities.
- Develop and maintain relationships on Capitol Hill and with key committees, subcommittees, districts, and states connected to international education and exchange.
- Strategically address legislative issues and collaborate with Alliance membership in advocacy campaigns.
Member Services and Representation
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with Alliance membership.
- Provide member services on various issues and concerns.
- Act as a key Alliance representative in committees, working groups, and industry conferences.
Executive Branch Relations
- Develop and maintain relationships with federal agencies such as Department of State, Department of Education, OMB, etc.
- Strategically address regulatory and programmatic issues affecting international education and exchange.
Policy Development
- Play a crucial role in strategizing, crafting, and advancing the Alliance’s policy agenda.
- Implement policy initiatives to support the Alliance’s mission and address threats to the exchange community.
Events Development and Management
- Support the organization of core Alliance events, including the Annual Conference and Advocacy Day fly-in event.
- Contribute to strategy and content for other events and workshops.
Board of Directors Relations
- Support the Alliance Board of Directors in its governance role.
- Keep the Board informed of internal conditions and important external developments.
Qualifications
- Seven years of advocacy, government relations, legislative, or association/coalition management experience.
- Experience with international education and exchange programs or related international affairs issues.
- Strong writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills.
- Flexibility, creativity, and the ability to seamlessly move between team- and self-directed work.
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in international affairs, public policy, or related field is a plus.
The position is based in the DC-metro area. Some domestic/international travel is required. The Alliance offers a competitive salary, a generous benefits package, and a flexible, hybrid work schedule.
