Job Description for Executive Director, Emerge Maryland
Emerge Maryland is the premier political training program for Democratic women who want to run for public office. Our mission is to identify, recruit, and train Democratic women to run for elective office at the local, state, and federal levels.
Emerge Maryland is a 527 political organization affiliated with Emerge America, which currently has programs in 20 states. Emerge Maryland has trained over 200 women and is in its twelfth year of operation. Emerge Maryland does not endorse nor make contributions to candidates.
Position Summary
Emerge Maryland is seeking a highly motivated and dynamic individual to serve as Executive Director (ED). The ED reports to the Board of Directors of Emerge Maryland. This is a full-time, remote position, with flexible hours. Some statewide travel is required.
Position Responsibilities
Program
- Recruit and participate in the selection of class members, much of which happens on evenings and weekends.
- Organize and lead the program’s training sessions, including recruiting and scheduling presenters and organizing the logistics of program delivery.
- Support class members throughout the annual program.
- Build and maintain alumnae relations.
- Recruit and manage volunteers.
Revenue Development and Financial Management
- Develop the organization’s annual budget with the Board Treasurer and Finance Committee.
- Develop and implement the organization’s revenue development plan.
- Organize and implement fundraising programs and events to raise revenue, including soliciting sponsorships and leveraging board assistance and expertise.
- Maintain all financial management systems and accounting records, and file all required IRS documents.
Board Relationship
- Work closely with the Board Chair, committees, and the entire Board to develop and implement strategic goals.
- Schedule Board and committee meetings, set meeting agendas, gather and provide relevant documents, and take minutes as needed.
- Communicate regularly with the Board of Directors.
External Communications and Relationships
- Represent the organization at events throughout Maryland to increase awareness of the mission and programs of the organization, which may happen on evenings and weekends.
- Expand and maintain Emerge Maryland’s networks of diverse program members, donors, supporters, alumnae, volunteers, and the Board of Directors.
- Develop and maintain a database and relationships with class members, alumnae, donors, the Maryland Democratic Party, elected officials, political organizations, supporters, and media.
- Work with Emerge America and other Emerge state affiliates by participating in national meetings and phone calls, and by sharing best practices and other expertise and knowledge.
- Maintain the organization’s website and social media.
Experience and Qualifications
- Passionate advocate for advancing women’s leadership in politics.
- Demonstrated commitment to the Democratic Party and Emerge Maryland.
- Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to multitask, manage time well, work independently, be flexible, meet deadlines, and thrive under pressure.
- Proficient in building effective relationships with diverse constituencies.
- Competent in budget management and revenue generation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with comfort in public speaking.
- Skilled in leveraging technology, data management, and social media effectively.
- Minimum of 7-10 years of relevant professional work experience preferred.
- Non-profit management experience preferred, including in board relationships, financial management, fundraising, media, and program development.
- Prior fundraising experience is a plus.
Additional Requirements
- Travel required in-state with occasional trips out of state.
- Valid driver’s license and vehicle.
- Remote office space with a cell phone, laptop, and printer.
- Flexible work hours that include occasional evenings and weekends.
Salary
The salary range is $65,000-$80,000, commensurate with experience with the opportunity for performance-based bonuses, plus a health insurance stipend.
