Federal Government Affairs Manager

We are looking to hire someone to work in our Washington, DC office with a hybrid schedule (2+ days/week in office).


Job Summary

The Federal Government Affairs Manager is responsible for assisting in the development and execution of strategies to influence federal government policies and regulations by building and maintaining relationships with Members of Congress and their staffs. This position will be an integral leader in developing and driving NiSource-wide policy priorities. Additionally, the role will manage NiSource’s PAC, NiPAC, including solicitation of eligible employees, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, and performing other PAC administrative duties as required.


Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with the Director of Federal Government Affairs to drive the development and execution of government affairs strategies designed to meet the organization’s strategic goals and objectives.
  • Build and maintain relationships with government officials, policymakers, and trade associations to advocate for the organization’s priorities.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to educate and analyze the impact of proposed regulations and legislation on the organization and develop appropriate responses and action plans.
  • Develop and execute the organization’s strategic public policy priorities and advocacy plans that are integral to the company’s long-term success.
  • Manage NiPAC to support state and federal governmental affairs activities.
  • Develop solicitation strategies, implement plans, and lead solicitation campaigns that enlist executive management support to ensure funding is available to meet corporate business objectives.
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with all state and Federal Election Commission regulations by managing and filing NiPAC reports and related disclosures.
  • File all required reports related to federal lobbying and gift disclosure. Establish and maintain records necessary to support such reports.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications for the Position

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 4-6 years of experience working on energy and environmental policy with a Capitol Hill office, federal agency, corporation, or trade association.
  • Experience in developing and implementing successful government affairs strategies.
  • Strong analytical and research skills to assess the impact of proposed regulations and legislation.
  • Understanding of political action committees and the rules/regulations surrounding a PAC.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively lead cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to travel as needed for meetings, conferences, and other relevant events.

Preferred Additional Qualifications for the Position

  • In-depth knowledge of the current and emerging issues facing the utility industry and/or prior experience working within the utility industry.
  • Strong existing network and relationships with key stakeholders in the government and advocacy community.

Salary Range

  • $125,800.00 – $188,600.00
