SUMMARY
The Policy Center at ZERO TO THREE, a nonpartisan, research-based resource for policymakers and advocates on the unique developmental needs of infants and toddlers, is seeking a Director, Government Relations (Director). The Director is responsible for shaping, developing, and implementing strategy with Congress and the Administration to accomplish ZERO TO THREE’s goals of ensuring that all babies and toddlers have a strong start in life.
The Director will supervise a team of policy analysts who possess deep subject matter expertise in their respective issue areas and will work collaboratively with leadership within the Policy Center, across the organization, and with outside government relations consultants to set and execute federal strategic goals and priorities and monitor impact in advancing a comprehensive, equity-centered, policy agenda aligned to the mission and vision of ZERO TO THREE.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Leadership
- Overseeing and managing ZERO TO THREE’s government relations strategy.
- Collaborating with the Lead Impact Officer for the Policy Center.
- Ensuring policy positions reflect ZERO TO THREE’s values and commitment to racial equity.
Team Leadership and Supervision
- Supervising a team of policy analysts.
- Providing mentorship and support to build and retain a proactive team.
- Ensuring consistency of approach, content, and quality across the organization.
Political Acumen, Policy Analysis, and Planning
- Understanding the political landscape and federal legislative processes.
- Analyzing legislative concepts related to ZERO TO THREE’s federal policy agenda.
Execution and Communication
- Building relationships with federal policymakers and Administration officials.
- Representing ZERO TO THREE in relevant coalitions and groups.
- Garnering visibility for policy and legislative work through various mediums.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
- Minimum of 7 years relevant work experience.
- Advanced knowledge of federal legislative and regulatory processes.
- Strong critical thinking, strategic planning, and communication skills.
ESSENTIAL QUALITIES
- Encourages critical thinking and practices empathy.
- Maintains respectful and collaborative relationships.
- Supports colleagues’ work efforts collaboratively and creatively.
EDUCATION
- Law degree or master’s degree in public policy, social work, political science, or related field.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Salary estimated low $130,000s to high $140,000s depending on experience. ZERO TO THREE offers a comprehensive benefits package.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Frequent computer use, sitting for extended periods, occasional travel.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Typically indoors in an office setting, occasional travel may be required.
