Government Relations Specialist
Position Purpose
The Specialist will facilitate operations of The Home Depot’s Washington DC office, providing primary support to the assigned VP and working collaboratively with the Government Relations and External Communications teams to support various projects. The role will handle building management and event logistics, oversee external partnerships and internship programs, political compliance, executive visits, presentation support, and other duties as needed.
Ideal candidates have a strong customer service and teamwork mindset, creative problem-solving skills, and the ability to multitask.
Key Responsibilities
35% Administrative
Identify needs and initiate projects independently
Set priorities and procedures for accomplishing work, delegating responsibility as needed
Act as gatekeeper for VP with regard to scheduling, visitors, and correspondence; maintain confidentiality
May supervise a single or group of non-exempt support secretary staff or interns, including hiring, training, and performance appraisal
Review and question, where necessary, expense reports of VP’s direct reports
Make complex domestic or international travel arrangements
Operate a variety of office equipment
Progressively use the features of one or more standard business software packages
Assist VP with special projects as needed
Compile/edit department submissions for the Weekly Report of the General Counsel
Draft fundraising invites/thank-you letters from ELT
Collaborate on social media campaigns
Create, compile, and edit presentations
Plan and track budget spending
Maintain department finance records (e.g., contacts, invoices, receipts, etc.)
Submit budget items for payment
25% Policy and Research
Conduct research on issues relevant to the company’s business
Work with team to establish policy positions
Write and maintain one-pagers and white papers
Attend coalition meetings
Follow Congressional hearings and track legislation
Assess company ROI on GR-driven policy initiatives
20% Events Planning and External Relations
Maintain external partnerships and sponsorships
Request/approve THD sponsorship ads and write program copy
Coordinate logistics for executive visits/trips (e.g., Ford’s Annual Gala, Store Managers Meeting)
Provide guidance to interns on:
Planning and coordinating receptions, dinners, fly-ins, and meetings
Scheduling PAC Member DC tours/events
20% Internship Program
Write and post internship requisitions
Schedule and conduct intern interviews
Conduct intern onboarding
Approve intern timesheets and expenses
Assign duties to interns as appropriate

Travel Requirements
Typically requires overnight travel less than 10% of the time
Physical Requirements
Most of the time is spent sitting in a comfortable position with frequent opportunities to move about
On rare occasions, there may be a need to move or lift light articles
Working Conditions
Located in a comfortable indoor area
Any unpleasant conditions would be infrequent and not objectionable
Minimum Qualifications
Must be eighteen years of age or older
Must be legally permitted to work in the United States

Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently with minimal direction

Work Location
Hybrid: An associate in a hybrid role blends in-office and remote/virtual working to complete job duties. An associate may be required to work from a designated Home Depot location on some days and from a virtual/remote location on others. Also referred to as location – flex.
Work From Home – Location Specific: An associate in this role primarily works from home but is assigned a THD location and is periodically required to report to the office. Associates must live within the same state and within a commutable distance of their assigned THD location.
