Government Affairs Legislative Assistant

VVA, a congressionally chartered national nonprofit Veterans Service Organization, is seeking a Government Affairs Legislative Assistant. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion and aptitude for operating in the fast-paced legislative and regulatory environment of Washington, D.C. They must be well organized, and a dedicated professional with at least two years of administrative, communications and computer experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serves as the primary point of contact for the Legislative Action network; produces and distributes online mailings, Action Alerts, and other communications.
- Assists in coordinating grassroots legislative initiatives with members.
- Coordinates responses to and tracks requests from congressional committees, Members of Congress, and congressional staff regarding current law, legislative proposals, regulatory actions, and VVA member inquiries.
- Drafts general correspondence for the National President’s signature, including responses to Congress, Department of Veterans Affairs, and other agencies.
- Monitors legislation and congressional schedules utilizing web-based programs.
- Monitors hearings and meetings, when assigned by the Director of Government Affairs.
- Under the direction of the Deputy Director, Government Affairs, ensures communication of all relevant information to appropriate VVA leadership and staff.
- Serves as functional electronic file manager for the department, including establishing and maintaining a functional filing system.
- Manages and prioritizes all department mail and other correspondence.
- Performs clerical duties such as photocopying, preparing outgoing mail, sending courier (UPS, FEDEX) overnight and ground packages, and transmitting correspondence.
- Assures availability of necessary office supplies for the department.
- Maintains a calendar of activities for the department.
- Works cooperatively with others in VVA.
- Maintains an orderly work environment.
- Maintains attention to detail in all work performed.
- Documents, processes and tracks in-coming communications and requests.
- Performs other duties and special projects as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications:
- (Must be) U.S. citizen
- U.S. Military background
- Knowledge and understanding of congressional affairs and activities, including the legislative process at the federal, state, and local levels.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
Experience:
Two years of administrative experience in a subject area relevant to local government or congressional affairs, including at least six months to a year professional experience in the legislative field.
Education/Equivalency:
Associate degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
