POSITION SUMMARY

Assist NMHC in building comprehensive advocacy programs to expand advocacy engagement amongst NMHC’s stakeholders including grassroots programs, grasstops advocacy programs, incentive programs, and other programs as needed. Help advance NMHC Federal Legislative, Regulatory, and Political Agenda in general, and on specific topics and issues as assigned. Manage Government Affairs department operations broadly and coordinate cross departmental collaboration. Support all aspects of legislative tracking, meeting planning, member outreach, and advocacy efforts.

EXPERTISE:

Knowledge of advocacy and membership engagement. General knowledge of legislative and regulatory processes. Priority federal policy areas for NMHC include housing affordability, finance, tax policy, technology, land use and regulatory reform. Expertise in specific legislative and regulatory issues would be an asset.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with the Vice President of Government Affairs to expand NMHC’s grassroots and grasstops initiatives, including creating and managing member Call to Actions and leveraging other effective indirect lobbying strategies to advance NMHC’s legislative and regulatory agenda.
  • Identify ways to elevate NMHC advocacy to members and policymakers, including advancing NMHC’s Issue Advocacy Campaign strategy and action program.
  • Establish and execute NMHC’s Key Contact/Grasstops Program by involving more facets of NMHC’s membership and expanding our engagement with lawmakers beyond meetings in their Washington, D.C. offices.
  • Work with the Vice President of Government Affairs in identifying federal legislative and regulatory issues important to multifamily, in general, and specifically on issues such as insurance, technology, housing policy, and others as assigned.
  • Write and edit content for the monthly newsletter and subject matter diary posts.
  • Assist in ensuring Government Affairs content including fact sheets, comment letters, and policy issue resources are up to date on the NMHC website.
  • Support NMHC’s coalition engagement, including the Housing Affordability Coalition, Housing Solutions Coalition, and other industry coalition work.
  • Assist Government Affairs staff in the execution of the NMHC Fall Meeting and other NMHC member meetings with Congressional and Administration officials to highlight policy and advocacy work and priorities.
  • Assist Government Affairs staff in preparing presentations, briefing memos, talking points and other advocacy collateral for industry stakeholders and policymakers.
  • Coordinate and function as liaison with Communications staff and NMHC members and key stakeholders on advocacy, legislative, regulatory and industry priorities and trends and assist with webinars, industry guidance, NMHC newsletter and trade press articles and commentary.
  • Assist lobbying team with coverage at political events and policy-focused events.
  • Actively collaborate with NMHC government affairs team and other NMHC departments to carry out NMHC strategic goals and specific objectives.
  • Work closely with NMHC Government Affairs Associate.
  • Perform other duties, as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.A. or B.S. required.
  • 3-4 years of government affairs and advocacy engagement experience or equivalent.
  • 1-2 years of supervisory experience would be a plus.
  • Ability to prioritize, work well under pressure and capably manage multiple tasks within tight deadlines.
  • Organized with an eye for detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact professionally with a diverse group, including but not limited to executives, managers, and subject matter experts.
  • Ability to be a team player as well as work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Must be computer proficient, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
