Manager of State Advocacy

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 and representing over 105,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking a Manager of State Advocacy to join our Division of State Advocacy located in our Washington, D.C. office. This position will help implement the AVMA’s state legislative and regulatory initiatives. The mission of the Association is to lead the profession by advocating for our members and advancing the science and practice of veterinary medicine to improve animal and human health.

Reporting to the Division Director, the Manager of State Advocacy supports the activities of the Association’s constituent organizations (state and allied veterinary medical associations) across a range of issues where veterinary professionals’ input and influence are anticipated to benefit. Key areas include the AVMA’s state-level advocacy agenda, the strategic objectives of the Advocacy business unit, and the overall strategic objectives of the AVMA. The Manager will work collaboratively with AVMA’s volunteer leadership, staff, and constituent organizations to create and provide resources on issues pertaining to the scientific and business interests of the veterinary profession. In addition, they will assist the AVMA’s Government Relations Division in developing recommendations and implementing approved programs to support a robust, effective, and collaborative state-level advocacy agenda that aligns with the AVMA’s public policy and advocacy objectives.

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you must be highly collaborative and passionate about the AVMA’s mission and increasing member satisfaction and engagement. Additional qualifications include:

  • BA/BS degree.
  • Minimum of 3 years of related work experience with demonstrated knowledge of and experience with state-level advocacy initiatives at a professional association; engagement with state chapters is a plus.
  • Must possess excellent project management and organizational skills and be able to effectively prioritize competing demands and projects.
  • Strong relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to identify, read, analyze, and interpret legislation, regulations, and other public policy documents, program descriptions, and related analyses that have the potential to impact the practice of veterinary medicine.
  • Ability to define problems, collect and interpret data, establish facts, draw conclusions, and convey related information effectively and timely to AVMA leadership, membership, and other staff of the AVMA and its constituent organizations.
  • Must be able to effectively interact and communicate in writing and verbally with members of the scientific and nonscientific communities, employees of governmental and nongovernmental organizations, legislators, regulators, and their staffs.
  • Ability to present information effectively; public speaking experience is a plus.
  • Must be able to deal with interpersonal conflicts and maintain confidentiality in communications.
  • Must function well both autonomously and as a team member.
  • Basic computer skills (e.g., proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and various internet browsers and search engines), as well as familiarity with legislative and regulatory search programs and engines, are required.
  • Must be able to work after normal business hours and/or on weekends occasionally as needed.
  • Approximately 10% travel required.
