We are a nonprofit, donor-supported organization that has raised and invested billions of dollars to help develop cystic fibrosis therapies that have changed the lives of people with this disease. Nearly every CF medicine available today was made possible because of Foundation support.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position manages the Foundation’s federal policy portfolio for issues related to basic research and drug discovery and development. Specifically, the federal policy manager will serve as the Foundation’s lead analyst on policies related to basic research and therapeutic discovery, development, and approval, as well as a range of additional issues. This portfolio includes legislative and regulatory policies and requires close collaboration with the Foundation’s scientific and therapeutics development teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages federal policy analysis and advocacy related to basic research and therapeutic discovery, development, and approval.
Analyzes legislation, regulations, and guidance documents to determine implications for the CF research and drug development agenda.
Develops legislative/regulatory comments and issues campaign materials, including letters, web content, talking points, and additional documents to further the Foundation’s research and drug development policy agenda.
Maintains in-depth knowledge of CF research and drug development, clinical trial design concerns, and rare disease research.
Serves as a subject matter expert on a variety of health and science policy issues, including policies relating to the Food and Drug Administration, National Institutes of Health (NIH), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as issues related to biomedical research, drug development, antibiotic resistance, and lung transplantation.
Cultivates relationships with key internal and external stakeholders, including the research and clinical trials teams, to facilitate effective collaboration in developing research and drug development policy positions.
Tracks and analyzes research, drug discovery, and development trends, and key advancements in the field, with particular focus on clinical trial design.
Monitors NIH and relevant Institutes funding priorities; develops and implements strategies to advance CF research goals within NIH.
Represents CFF on Capitol Hill, in meetings with federal agencies, and in meetings with other stakeholders about research and drug development and other public health issues.
Coordinates with federal & state policy, grassroots advocacy, government affairs, patient assistance, and communications colleagues to ensure alignment across policy priorities and campaigns.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s degree, in public policy, public health, social sciences, political science, or biological sciences. Master’s degree a plus.
Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.
Scientific background with previous experience in monitoring and analyzing science and/or drug development or public policy.
Demonstrated knowledge of legislative, regulatory, and political processes.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite – Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to the Senior Director, Policy and Advocacy. No direct reports.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust and temperature.
No heavy lifting required.
Limited travel to conferences and meetings, as necessary.
