We’re looking for an experienced Director, Southeast Alaska Government & Community Relations. This position will be responsible for building and sustaining strong relationships with key local stakeholders, including state and local government officials, community leaders, and influential organizations and will play a pivotal role in shaping and nurturing HAP’s presence and reputation within Southeast Alaska. The position is based in Juneau, Alaska.

Responsibilities
- Establish and maintain robust channels for stakeholders to provide feedback and voice their perspectives on significant issues, fostering a two-way dialogue that enhances mutual understanding and collaboration.
- Develop a deep understanding of the needs, priorities, and concerns of state and local government entities, community organizations, and other influential groups in Southeast Alaska.
- Strategic Development and Management: Create, refine, and lead the Alaska Community Affairs strategy, ensuring it aligns seamlessly with HAP’s broader organizational goals and objectives. Influence city leaders and political representatives to promote favorable policies for the cruising sector. Set clear priorities, define key initiatives, and develop actionable plans to effectively address community needs and advance HAP’s mission.
- Work with the Community Relations Director and VP to ensure that community investments are aligned with corporate and political goals, including ensuring that the correct political leadership in local communities are aware of our ongoing corporate investments. Support corporate giving initiatives.
- Proactively identify and address issues related to compliance with new and existing regulations that may affect our local properties and/or the cruise industry. This involves developing and implementing strategies for our contributions, ensuring they support our broader business objectives, and keeping local political and community leaders informed about our initiatives.
- Monitor local city council meetings and develop strategies for engagement with them.
- Ensure that the VP is aware of potential problems and opportunities as they arise at the local level.
- Facilitate Internal Communication: Act as a conduit for industry-relevant information, ensuring that Brand leaders and internal stakeholders are well-informed about pertinent developments and trends. Facilitate the flow of insights and updates to support informed decision-making and strategic alignment within the organization. Develop a strategy to ensure compliance with new and existing regulations, as well as local and state policies. Communicate changes to senior leadership when necessary.
- Advocate for HAP’s contributions to the local economy and community well-being through targeted outreach and engagement efforts.
- Provide regular updates and reports to the VP of Government & Community Relations on key activities, stakeholder interactions, and emerging issues.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited university/college
- Minimum 10 years of Government Relations, Media Relations, and/or Public Relations experience.
- Former consultancy experience and/or public sector experience in community relations is preferred, as is familiarity with the shipping/cruise industry.
- Knowledge of port operations elements, including but not limited to services required, port tariffs, maritime requirements of ports, etc.
- Finance management or budget preparation experience.
- Ability to develop third-party relationships, such as with government agencies.
- Strong negotiation skills.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills; exceptional level of integrity and ethical behavior.
- Able to effectively interact with individuals and entities ranging from frontline employees to senior executives and officials.
