About Nareit

Nareit represents a large and diverse industry that includes equity REITs, which own commercial properties and are either traded on major stock exchanges, public non-listed REITs, or private REITs, as well as mortgage REITs, which invest in mortgage securities. Together, they own more than $3 trillion in real estate assets.

By making investment in these assets easy and widely available through stock purchases, Nareit’s 200+ members enable all investors—importantly, everyday investors—to own income-producing real estate, something that was once only possible for large institutions and the wealthy.

Nareit is the leading producer and sponsor of research on REIT investment and industry ESG matters, using this research to communicate the benefits of REITs to investors, policymakers, and the media. The organization also provides REIT news, data, and industry insights to its audiences.

As the voice for the REIT industry among U.S. policymakers, Nareit informs them about the important role REITs and REIT investment play in job creation, economic growth, and the lives of millions of investors. The association also serves as an information resource for policymakers in countries worldwide that have introduced or are considering introducing REITs.

About REITs

REITs invest in America’s future. Through the 530,000+ properties they own, finance, and operate, REITs provide the essential real estate that revitalizes neighborhoods, enables the digital economy, powers community essential services, and builds the infrastructure of tomorrow—while also creating American jobs and economic activity along the way.

REITs of all types collectively own more than $4.5 trillion in gross assets across the U.S., with stock-exchange-listed REITs owning over $3 trillion in assets. U.S.-listed REITs have an equity market capitalization of more than $1.3 trillion.

REITs give everyday investors a way to invest in real estate, and 150 million Americans live in households that benefit from REIT ownership through stocks, 401(k) plans, pension plans, and other investment funds.

REITs invest in a wide range of property types, including:

  • Offices
  • Apartment buildings
  • Warehouses
  • Retail centers
  • Medical facilities
  • Data centers
  • Communications towers
  • Infrastructure
  • Hotels

Most REITs specialize in a particular property type, but some diversify across multiple categories within their portfolios.
