Department Summary

MITRE Government Relations, which has primary responsibility within MITRE for engaging with the U.S. Congress and elected officials at the state and local levels, is seeking a Government Relations Specialist who will focus on supporting MITRE’s engagement with congressional state/district offices and state and local elected officials.

Roles & Responsibilities

The Government Relations Specialist will work to support and work closely with current GR principals and leaders across MITRE, providing logistical, research, and analytical support. As a Government Relations Specialist you will play an important role in supporting the execution of MITRE’s overall government relations program.

At the direction of the Director or government relations principals:

  • Tracks introduction of and actions taken on legislation at the federal, state, and local levels in issue areas important to internal customers and MITRE’s independent and federally-funded research programs, and performs legislative analysis of annual appropriations bills and other legislation of interest to internal customers.
  • Monitors Congressional hearings and legislative developments within committees, reviews hearing transcripts, and provides summaries and analysis.
  • Helps prepare briefing materials for officers and subject matter experts in advance of Congressional engagement activities.
  • Supports successful execution of Congressional and other VIP visits to MITRE.
  • Supports activities to educate staff on proper ways to interface with congressional, state, and local elected officials.
  • Works with internal resources to create and manage outreach-oriented resource materials.
  • Develops and maintains contact lists for federal, state, and local engagement.
  • Develops and reports on engagement metrics.
  • Performs special research projects as assigned.
  • Supports engagement with elected officials as directed.

Basic Qualifications

  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • High level of tact and diplomacy.
  • Demonstrated experience tracking the introduction of and actions taken on legislation at the federal, state, and local level.
  • Demonstrated experience building relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Thorough knowledge of the legislative process and of Congressional organization and procedures.
  • At least two years of experience working directly with Congress or for a firm that supports congressional engagement.
  • Comfortable with technical topics and engineering and scientific experts.
  • Ability to multi-task and shift gears quickly.
  • This position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct experience serving on a Congressional staff for four or more years in positions of increasing responsibility.
  • Experience working with senior leaders.
