Navy League of the United States: Associate, Legislative Affairs

We are seeking a passionate and highly motivated Associate to join our Legislative Affairs Department. This position will assist with:

  • Congressional advocacy campaigns.
  • Maintaining relationships in Congress.
  • Coordinating and overseeing advocacy efforts with the Navy League grassroots network.
  • Publishing the weekly newsletter.
  • Collaborating with the Marketing Department on social media content.
  • Viewing and annotating relevant Congressional hearings.
  • Assisting with event logistics.
  • Drafting Issue Briefs and Appropriations Letters.
  • Data input and maintaining the Legislative Affairs “Action Center” website.

While this position reports to the Senior Director of Legislative Affairs, the Associate of Legislative Affairs (ALA) is expected to demonstrate independence and accountability. The ideal candidate will:

  • Self-direct without continuous oversight.
  • Take proactive steps to enhance the Legislative Affairs program.
  • Exhibit intellectual curiosity to continually learn about the sea services, the Navy League, and the operations of Congress.

The ALA will collaborate with various Navy League departments to coordinate Legislative Affairs communications and events and support organization-wide events such as Sea Air Space and the annual Navy League Convention.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • View/attend relevant Congressional hearings and take notes on key moments, including quotes, questions, answers, and priorities related to the sea services.
  • Update the Legislative Affairs “Action Center” website.
  • Assist with the publication of the weekly newsletter.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Director of Legislative Affairs to oversee interns and SkillsBridge fellows.
  • Help edit and publish the biennial Maritime Policy Statement and upload updates to the digital magazine platform.
  • Assist with planning and executing monthly “Pizza Briefs.”
  • Support the planning and execution of quarterly Congressional Shipbuilding Breakfast events.
  • Conduct research and draft Issue Briefs for policy campaigns.
  • Update website features such as Voice to Congress, grassroots presentations, advocacy toolkit materials, email campaigns, and district profiles.
  • Provide support to the Navy League grassroots network as needed.
  • Assist other Navy League departments as required.
  • Support the Senior Director of Legislative Affairs with additional initiatives as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (relevant campaign or government experience is a plus).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Understanding of Congressional committees and the legislative process.
  • Experience in website design or maintenance is a plus.
