Manager, Government Affairs

America’s Blood Centers (ABC), North America’s largest network of community-based, independent blood programs, is seeking an Associate Director, Government Affairs. The position will be actively involved and accountable in building relationships with members of Congress and their staff, implementing a grassroots strategy to involve ABC members and other stakeholders in advocacy initiatives, assisting with coordination of state-level advocacy among ABC members, and tracking and providing updates on advocacy developments. The position will report to the Senior Director, Federal Government Affairs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Represent ABC before the U.S Congress, building and maintaining strong relationships and improving the visibility of ABC member centers before Congress.
  • Work as part of the government affairs team to develop materials for use on Capitol Hill.
  • Develop and manage ABC’s grassroots advocacy program, including the development of key contacts and ABC’s annual Day on Capitol Hill, part of Blood Advocacy Week.
  • Build relationships with third-party stakeholders and participate in coalitions as assigned.
  • Regularly monitor and analyze health-related legislation, providing high-quality verbal and written reports, position statements, talking points, and other materials.
  • Assist in the development of educational opportunities for ABC members related to advocacy, including the development of advocacy content and programs for ABC meetings and workshops.
  • Coordinate state government affairs work among ABC member blood centers.
  • Work on special projects and other duties as required helping to promote the association’s success.
  • Local travel required.

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor’s required.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum 3 years of combined Capitol Hill, Executive Branch, government relations, and/or public policy experience.
  • Thorough understanding of the federal legislative processes and landscape.
  • Knowledge of and experience in health policy.
  • Strong working relationships with members of Congress and staff.
  • Strong written and oral communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills and detailed oriented.
  • Requires ability to multitask and determine priorities.
  • Requires ability to manage and work as part of teams.

This position is based in Washington D.C.
