About the Role:
In this role, you will be a member of the Policy Advocacy and Federal Government Affairs team, serving as the bp interface with the federal government (legislative and executive branch) and key external groups (e.g., trade associations, NGOs, think tanks). You will represent bp businesses and interests across a range of issues that advance bp’s transformation from an international oil and gas company to an integrated energy company.
You will own a portfolio of emerging and current legislative, regulatory, policy, and political issues in the U.S. that could impact bp, working directly with our businesses and the broader Communications & External Affairs (C&EA) team to successfully implement bp’s lobbying and advocacy strategy.
Role Requirements:
- Build and maintain direct relationships with Members of Congress, Congressional staff, and key administration officials to effectively advocate on behalf of bp’s interests.
- Own a portfolio of advocacy priorities and influence legislative and regulatory activity through strategic engagements with stakeholders such as Congressional offices and committees, federal agencies, trade associations, and non-governmental entities.
- Lead advocacy on federal regulatory actions, including preparation and submission of regulatory comments, and engage with agencies, Congress, and other stakeholders on bp’s priorities.
- Monitor and maintain an understanding of key legislation, regulation, and policy trends, assessing the potential impacts on bp’s business.
- Interact directly with senior executives and business unit leaders on their priorities, developing and implementing external engagement plans, and keeping them informed of advocacy developments.
- Coordinate with the broader C&EA group to ensure that public and government affairs strategies are aligned and coordinated at every level to support bp’s business needs.
- Lead coalitions within bp and with external groups in support of bp’s advocacy.
- Represent bp on key committees at trade associations in Washington, DC.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 5 – 7 years of experience working on Capitol Hill for a Member of Congress or a Congressional Committee, with experience in energy or oil and gas issues.
- Experience in states with a broad energy industry presence is a plus.
- Existing network of relationships with key Congressional and government stakeholders in the energy policy community.
- Strong understanding of energy and environmental policy issues, with experience working on oil, gas, and clean energy transition issues preferred.
- Familiarity with the federal legislative and regulatory process and advocacy tools.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to distill complex information into key takeaways with speed and precision.
- Flexible, agile, and able to work collaboratively with colleagues globally.
- Familiarity with bp’s business strategy and commercial drivers.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a time-sensitive environment.
- Self-starter with executive presence and strong prioritization, problem-solving, and planning skills.
- Proven track record of building relationships with a diverse range of collaborators.
- High energy and passion for new and evolving challenges.
Compensation:
Base Salary Range: $150K – $180K
Note: The pay range listed is a genuinely expected and reasonable estimate at the time of posting.
