Position Summary
Under the direction of the director of AFT Political or their designee, the senior associate will assist AFT local and state affiliates with political and legislative activities by providing guidance and expertise on legislative and electoral programs, including volunteer recruitment, political fundraising and civic participation programs, with an emphasis on member engagement. The senior associate will spend significant time in states working directly with affiliate leaders and their staff and will also coordinate AFT’s field participation in other labor programs or independent expenditure activities.

Position Responsibilities
Work directly with AFT affiliates to develop, plan and implement political and legislative programs and activities in support of the union’s goals, including electoral and issue mobilization.

Develop and implement programs to advance AFT’s political and legislative activities including, but not limited to, development of campaign plans, coordination of voter contact and member mobilization efforts, development and conducting of member trainings, including volunteer recruitment, and engaging with allied coalitions.

Organize and maintain records of local and state federation field activity and provide regular reports.

Provide advice and support to affiliates on political, electoral and legislative matters.

Other duties as assigned.

Ability to work independently is essential.

Primary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Extensive travel is required.

A minimum of three to five years of full-time political campaign experience with a union, candidate, political party, or community group.

Experience with political campaigns including campaign mobilization tools, voter files developing voter target lists for mail, canvassing, and phone banks, volunteer recruitment, and political trainings.

Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, as well as the ability to work in a collegial manner.

Extensive field experience is a plus.

Secondary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Experience working for, or in, a union environment or social justice organization is considered a plus.
