The Team

Make-A-Wish America is the national headquarters for our organization, providing resources and support for our Chapters around the country. The Legal Team ensures Make-A-Wish America complies with applicable laws and regulations; protects its intellectual property and other assets; and prudently manages its legal affairs in the most efficient and effective manner possible.

The Role

The Director of Legal & Risk will work closely with the Chief Legal & Risk Officer to direct, manage and advise on legal matters including contracts, labor and employment, intellectual property and litigation. In addition, the Director of Legal & Risk will oversee and manage the enterprise risk management program and strategies.

Where You Come In

As the Director, Legal & Risk you will:

  • Collaborate with various Make-A-Wish departments on organizational initiatives and advise on the law and best practices to protect the organization’s interests.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and industry developments affecting the organization.
  • Manage the organization’s intellectual property portfolio, including but not limited to registration and renewal of trademarks, oppositions, and ensuring proper use of trademarks.
  • Provide legal guidance and support to various departments across the organization.
  • Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of contracts including vendor agreements, license agreements, service contracts, and fundraising agreements.
  • Research legal issues and prepare legal memoranda and opinions.
  • Assist Chief Legal & Risk Officer with management of relationships and communication with outside counsel.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive risk management policies and procedures to identify, assess, and mitigate risks across all aspects of the organization.
  • Monitor market trends, regulatory developments, and emerging risks to assess their potential impact on the organization’s risk profile and develop appropriate mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare and maintain risk reports, analyses, and recommendations to track the progress of all risk-related initiatives, ensuring records related to the organization’s enterprise risk profile are complete, accurate, and timely.
  • Coordinate the organization’s periodic enterprise risk assessment process.
  • Promote a strong risk culture throughout the organization, raising risk awareness and ensuring that risk management is integrated into decision-making processes.
  • Establish appropriate and effective policies, guidelines, controls, and education related to risk initiatives.
  • Participate in cross-functional strategic initiatives, and assist with other functions within compliance, legal, and risk management as necessary.

What You’ll Need

  • Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school required.
  • Active license to practice law in at least one U.S. state required.
  • 5+ years of experience in a law firm or in-house legal department.
  • 5+ years of experience as a people leader, required.
  • Experience leading Enterprise Risk Management, required.
  • Experience with nonprofit law, working knowledge of the federated model, preferred.
  • Professional credential in risk management discipline, preferred.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, balance and prioritize multiple projects, work efficiently under time constraints, and satisfactorily meet internal and external deadlines.
  • Integrity, professional discretion, and ability to handle sensitive/confidential matters.
  • Position may require travel to organizational conferences and events.
