The American Hospital Association (AHA) is a national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. The AHA has two main offices, located in Washington, D.C., and Chicago. We are currently seeking a Senior Associate Director, Federal Relations for our Washington, D.C., office. This position is a hybrid role (three days in the office, two days working remote).

Starting base salary: $155,000 – $194,000 – $233,000 (commensurate with related experience). The AHA is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices. A candidate’s salary is determined by various factors, including but not limited to, relevant work experience, skills, certifications, and location.

The Senior Associate Director, Federal Relations is responsible for representing AHA’s interests before the U.S. Congress. Primary goals are to promote hospitals’ interests with primary congressional committees with the greatest importance to hospitals. This position will also assume a leadership role in legislative issues affecting hospitals and develop, advocate, and articulate AHA’s position, which will result in a positive impact on the political environment facing members, ensure support and understanding among members, and assist them in interpreting and thriving in that environment. This position also attends the weekly senior advocacy operations meetings.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and maintain working relationships with members of Congress and congressional staff on key committees that affect revenue streams and regulatory changes in health care.
  • Play a leadership role in developing AHA strategies and articulating AHA policies for assigned issues and congressional committees.
  • Draft AHA documents for advocacy and representation on issues under consideration for assigned congressional committees.
  • Establish and maintain effective communications and relationships with AHA members, providing AHA member briefings, having member liaison responsibilities for specific groups of members or a region of the country, and communicating regularly and effectively with members regarding concerns and progress.
  • Attend, plan, and participate in AHAPAC events for assigned members of Congress.
  • Travel to AHA member hospitals and health systems, as well as AHA regions and conventions, to provide briefings and AHA federal updates.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required: Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or better.

Experience

  • Required: 7 years of significant political, legislative, and trade association experience, including:
    • Political experience as staff to a Member of Congress, preferably with Committee responsibilities in health care or appropriations.
    • Background with a trade association involved in health care issues.
