Senior Director of Communications & Marketing

The American Soybean Association (ASA) seeks a senior director of communications and marketing. The position is focused strongly on policy communications, with this role responsible for building and maintaining ASA’s reputation as a leader in the national conversation on farm and food policy issues. This person will lead and manage ASA’s communications & marketing team, collaborate across ASA departments, with the board of directors and soy state affiliate members, and build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Areas directed under the communications & marketing umbrella include media relations; public relations; organization website; social and digital media; development of communications materials including external and internal publications, videos, newsletters, etc.; all other communications & marketing functions.

ASA is a national trade association that advocates on behalf of U.S. soybean farmers on domestic and international trade issues. It is the collective voice of nearly 500,000 producers in the 30 primary soybean-producing states, represented by 26 state affiliate members. ASA has offices in both St. Louis, Missouri, and Washington, D.C. This position is based in Washington, D.C., and reports to the CEO.

What we need:

  • Experience (8–10 years minimum) in positions of progressive responsibility in communications and management roles within the agriculture or food policy fields
  • Experience managing staff and projects on tight schedules and under stressful conditions
  • Proficiency in explaining complex topics in short format, including talking points, social media, etc.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills: press releases, media alerts, speeches, etc.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms; familiarity with graphic design principles
  • Existing relationships with agricultural and food media
  • Federal or state legislative or executive branch experience a plus
  • Trade association experience a plus
  • Understanding of U.S. agricultural and food landscape and policy
  • Experience managing projects; working with outside contractors and vendors
  • Relevant computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.
  • Exceptional organizational and collaborative skills
  • Can-do attitude
  • Team-oriented approach
  • Ability to effectively manage a team
  • Up to 20% travel
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, political science or related field
