#### Overview

AARP’s Community, State and National Affairs (CSN) Group includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach and Advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. It delivers on AARP’s social mission by educating and engaging people 50-plus and their families, strengthening communities, and championing issues that help give people financial and health security.

The Communications Director coordinates and integrates the work of business units across the organization to develop multichannel communications strategies designed to drive engagement and membership and shape the organization’s image in the marketplace. Oversees implementation of those plans and measures their impact. Develops messaging around all issues, initiatives and programs and ensures enterprise-wide message alignment.

#### Responsibilities

– Develops multichannel communications plans for new and existing initiatives, programs and offerings to reach key target audiences, oversee implementation and measure results.
– Creates and updates messaging for all initiatives, programs and offerings and ensures enterprise-wide alignment.
– Establishes annual communications priorities and the communications calendar for the enterprise. Identifies and mitigates brand risk.
– Collaborates with content teams to develop written and visual content that will resonate with target audiences and drive relevance for the organization.
– Vets content with experts from across the enterprise to ensure accuracy and message alignment.
– Collaborates with Brand to develop appropriate paid media material to promote messages and shape the marketplace. Collaborates with Social Media teams to amplify messages, promote programs, and initiatives.

#### Qualifications

– 8+ years of experience which includes speechwriting, journalism, or legislative writing experience.
– The ability to synthesize complicated legislative issues into clear, concise written materials for varying stakeholders, including governmental and policymaking audiences, external stakeholders, internal stakeholders, and the AARP Board of Directors.

**Preferred:**

– 8+ years of experience in both legislative and lobbying arenas preferred.
– AARP will not sponsor an employment visa for this position at this time.

– Effective verbal and written communication skills
– Exhibit respect and understanding of others to maintain professional relationships
– Independent judgment in evaluating options to make sound decisions
– In office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise
– Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds

#### Hybrid Work Environment

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as remote workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work can only be done within the United States and its territories.
