IBSS is seeking a Full Time Graphic Designer/Media Specialist to support the Alaska Fisheries Science Center’s (AFSC) diverse science portfolio by planning and executing the development of media and graphics materials that inform appropriate target audiences of AFSC’s research, accomplishments, and activities. The Graphic Designer/Media Specialist promotes AFSC science, products, and services internally and externally to other international, federal, state and local agencies, universities, and the general public.

### Key Responsibilities

– Assist in the development of materials for distribution to the media and general public through appropriate protocols.
– Support Communications staff in the development of various communications materials for web and social media platforms.
– Produce graphics, illustrations, infographics, animations, and other web-based and video products to support media and outreach projects.
– Maintain project archives and monitor and update project status reports.
– Support education and outreach staff at various public and internal events as required.
– Perform a variety of tasks/assignments in a fast-paced environment.
– Using agency branding, design, and format professionally designed outreach materials such as reports, fact sheets, posters, and presentations that help researchers convey dense scientific information that attracts the audience’s attention and helps them more easily understand the key messages of the presentation.
– Support staff in the development of various communications materials for web and social media platforms.
– Produce graphics, illustrations, infographics, animations, and other web-based and video products to support media and outreach projects.
– Maintain project archives and monitor and update project status reports.
– Perform a variety of tasks/assignments in a fast-paced environment.
– Create and adapt visual content for use in Drupal/blogs and web.
– Convert various graphic, audio, and video formats for use in PC environments.
– Complete communications materials to support media-related, education, and outreach efforts.
– Provide up-to-date status reports and archives of active and completed projects.
– Produce illustrations such as icons and badges to enhance print and online communications.
– Translate marine resource management and policy writing/content into easy-to-understand plain language content for use on the web, social media, and other communications and outreach products.
– Work with AFSC staff on content development and review for use in multiple outreach products.
– Draft and finalize outreach materials such as informational cards, booklets, and posters.

### Required Skills / Education / Certifications & Qualifications

– A graduate degree from an accredited college or university with a major in graphic design or a related field.
– Possesses a high degree of familiarity with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the graphic design field.
– Relies on a higher degree of experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
– Wide degree of creativity and latitude is required.
– Ability to create visual concepts (e.g., illustrations, technical drawings, and animations), by hand or using computer software.
– Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects, Premiere Pro, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.) to take and curate photos, graphics, animations, and/or videos for print and electronic media, such as brochures and web.
– Experienced in layout and production design.
– Experienced in the use of PowerPoint for animation and visual displays.
– Experienced developing short-format videos with closed captioning in Adobe or other products.
– Comfortable working with clients or the graphics design leads to determining the scope of a project.

### Desired Skills

– Familiarity with creating and adapting visual content for use in Twitter, Facebook, Drupal/blogs, and web.
– Ability to operate video cameras, audio recording tools, digitizing software (e.g., Adobe Audition), and studio lighting.
– Familiarity with converting various graphic, audio, and video formats for use in PC/Mac environments.
– Experience operating and maintaining large-format printers to produce posters, banners, and other materials.
