Description
The Coordinator, Media Relations is a member of the Communications and Advancement Department, reporting directly to the Senior Manager and Press Secretary. The coordinator is responsible for developing a variety of messaging content for the League of Women Voters of the United States (501(c)(4)) and its sister organization, the League of Women Voters Education Fund (501(c)(3)).
The Coordinator, Media Relations will play a key role in supporting the organization’s national communications efforts, including press releases, media advisories, talking points, and remarks for principals. This role will support proactive media outreach and rapid response by maintaining media lists and press coverage. Working with senior leadership, the media coordinator will ensure consistent messaging across platforms and support media and public engagements.
The salary range for this position is $65,000-$75,000 annually.
Essential Responsibilities
Content Development & Messaging
- Draft and distribute press releases, media advisories, and other press materials on the LWV website and in Cision in partnership with the Press Secretary.
- Assist in developing speeches, talking points, presentations, and other events for the League president and executive staff.
- Collaborate with the Comms team and other internal teams to draft messaging, talking points, and coordinated responses with Leagues.
Media Engagement & Relationship Management
- Work with Press Secretary to pitch story ideas to journalists and position League spokespersons on cable news and as guests on key podcasts.
- Respond to media and coordinate interview requests.
- Build and maintain press lists in Cision; track and elevate media requests.
Monitoring & Intelligence Gathering
- Monitor media coverage and prepare daily news clips in Cision.
- Track voting rights and election news and respond when appropriate.
Event & Principal Support
- Lives in the DC area and can staff principals and executive team at in-person events and press interviews when needed.
Flexibility & Operational Support
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including some nights and weekends during the election cycle and peak or rapid response times.

Requirements
Education/Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations or equivalent years of experience in a related field.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
Technical & Functional Expertise
- Experience in media relations/pitching, agency work, and media monitoring tools.
- Knowledge of politics and relevant issues.
- Website experience; Drupal preferred.
- Experience working with website and email tools (Drupal and Engaging Networks a plus).
- Design experience preferred.
Communication & Writing
- Strong writing, editing, and presentation skills.
- Ability to follow organizational or media style guides.
- Knowledge and passion for voting rights and women’s issues.
Organizational & Project Management
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and manage individual projects.
- Ability to work quickly under pressure, meet deadlines, and adapt to a fast-paced, changing environment.

- Functions well as a team player.
- A spirit of collaboration is a must.

- Willingness to work an adjusted schedule throughout the election cycle, including nights and weekends.

Physical Requirements
The person in this position is primarily sedentary and needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access office machinery. The person must also be available to travel to news offices and events. Computers and other office productivity machinery are constantly operated, such as a calculator, copy machine, computer, and computer printer.
