The Association of American Publishers is seeking a seasoned communications professional to join our small team of law, policy, and communications professionals as Director, Senior Director, or Vice President, with the title and salary to be determined commensurate with experience. The position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Chief Communications Officer.

What You Will Do

  • Direct global communications strategies to ensure AAP’s mission, vision, values, and priorities are effectively and consistently conveyed to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Cultivate and manage press relations, press inquiries, and media engagement.
  • Drive messaging that accurately and positively shapes public perception of key issues.
  • Create timely campaigns, information materials, press releases, editorials, and digital and social media content that capture AAP’s impact and relevance.
  • Contribute to short-term and long-term public affairs strategies.
  • Collaborate with internal and external policy experts, lawyers, and program executives.

Additional Information

This opening is an exceptional opportunity for a communications professional interested in law and policy, including, especially, issues that affect the integrity and sustainability of the publishing industry. Competitive candidates will have a bachelor’s degree, outstanding references, and a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in public affairs, policy, or strategic communications, ideally in a legislative, regulatory, or litigation environment in the public or private sector.

Under the guidance and direction of AAP’s CCO, this position will drive media strategy on issues of copyright and artificial intelligence, education, global markets, research and scholarship, and freedom of expression. The position also supports industry and statistics publications, congressional relations, and litigation priorities.

Compensation

The projected starting salary is $150k to $220k. This is a good faith compensation range that considers the specifics of the position and varying qualifications of candidates.
